Elderly man survives five days in the desert

wow drinking windshield wiper fluid that was filtered over a napkin? i am not sure that would work. i am glad he got home alright.

this just continues to show folks need to have some preps in there vehicle. a couple bottles of water, a little food, a blanket. some essentials would have made a world of difference

I'm always amazed when people ask me what is that black five gallon jug behind the seats of my pickup. When I explain that I live, work, and play in a near desert environment they usually get it.

Glad the tough old codger came out of it OK. But I wouldn't drink wiper fluid even after running it through my Katadyn.....

The guy lives in Arizona, might not have been wiper fluid in there maybe just real nasty water? Either way the man is very lucky. May this gentleman have 84 more years!

I think the old man did what he had to and I applaud his perseverance. The reflective piece of chrome on the roof, reading the car owners manual cover to cover. He did find new meaning in the importance of water and we can all learn a great deal from his mishap. I do hope he has a water jug and a good knife next time out:D

Do not agree with a napkin making wiper fluid safe to drink.

I'll bet it made sense at the time. Get thirsty enough, you'll drink anything. I'm guessing it was probably just water, or heavily diluted fluid, as some common types of washer fluid will f*** you up, if not kill you outright, containing ethylene glycol and/or methanol/otherwise denatured alcohol.

Good going, old man. Any survival situation that results in survival is a good one.

The Napkin did NOTHING to make it SAFER to drink

He is tough and lucky

He is tough and lucky

I would like to add alive to your list. He is alive because he did what he had to do. He could've laid there and died.

For all we know, he may have had some type of liquor in the windshield wiper reservoir. It wouldn't be the first time that someone has put something other than cleaner into the reservoir.

Yeah... like water. I don't think I've ever filled the reservoir in my car with anything else. Still, it is pretty grungy in there. Maybe that's where the handkerchief came in handy.

It depends on where he got the fluid. Since he's 84, I'm guessing that he's not changing his own oil anymore.

Having ran an oil change place in the past, I can tell you that until (at least the company I worked for) the outside temps are in the 30's or lower, the "wiper" fluid that they use is plain old water with an additive to make it blue and it puts a little detergent in the water so that it cleans better than plain old water. We only got the solvent based fluid when temps were 32 degrees or lower.

I'm going to guess that he just had the colored water in the car.
