electric motor question, commutator

I've just replaced the bearings in a 1hp motor that powers my dust collector. The adjustment of the commutator isn't perfect and the start-up is just a bit lagging/slow.

Any tricks on the adjustment would be greatly appreciated.

Frank - The motor spins just fine by hand. It does.... finally "kick in", but the revving up takes a lot longer than before. I've adjusted the commutator back and forth on the drive shaft, playing with the start-up, but I just haven't found the sweet spot where the motor doesn't lag too long before it spins full speed.

This is a 1ph capacitor start motor with starting windings and contacts that open as RPM reaches a certain point? Can you tell if the contacts are working? Either staying open, or not opening?

Hi Ken -

Yes.

The contacts are working. I think its really just the positioning on the shaft that is the issue. I don't know if there is a guideline or rule-of-thumb for the positioning.
