Hey guys, after building 4 knives and a half dozen tomahawks I decided I didn't care for dropping hot steel in my quench tank and hoping to get the oil to the correct temp, and then having to fish them out later. So after looking around on this and Don Fogg's site I decided to build a self heating quench tank.. I used a s/s fire extingisher as the tank body and attached a camco single element thermostat to a camco water heater element and mounted it to the tank with a camco universal element adapter kit. I also mounted a meat thermometer in the tank to keep track of the oil temp. After some adjusting I must say that the tank works great.. Just plug it in and it will go to and hold what ever temp you dial in.. One important thing the thermostat must be mounted to the tank body or it can't read the temp and will just keep heating untill the power plug burns up :grumpy: ( don't ask me how I know that )..All of the parts came from home depot and cost me about 25 bucks..If any one has questions I can post some pic's...

Very good recycle of an old soda acid fire extinguisher!
However, the exposed wiring terminations are very dangerous. Maybe use some liquid electrical insulation on the terminals and some adhesive tywraps to secure the loose wiring. Would hate to see you light up like a 100 watt bulb.

Of all the knife making equipment that we build ourselves I think heated quench tanks take the prize for some of the most creative design ideas.

Very cool and creative idea Rocketman! I am still using an old bread pan and a single element hotplate I got for $5. For the thermometer I swipe the digital one from the BBQ since I never HT and BBQ at the same time.

Cooter not to worry, I removed the protective tape for picture purposes and promply replaced it :D :D ...
