electric sharpeners

I shoulda known when I first read the forum, to hightail it for the woods!!! I'm now the proud owner of three knives that cost more than my first car ($75-'53 Buick)...and I'm realizing that this is just the prelude to a Sebenza and that I'm screwed!........anyway are any of those electric sharpeners advisable? I do sharpen my own wood chisels and have a selection of stones and guides etc.....OK I've realized this was a stupid question to begin with and that soon I'll find myself in the shop mumbling away and sharpening my knives by hand!

Speaking of sharpeners, what about those kitchen types which have two small interlocking discs and you are supposed to draw your knives across them.

Are these types of sharpeners good enough for most knives?

Yes, they have a lot of limitations (fixed angle, grit selection, slow cutting speed etc.). However they can be useful for a quick touchup of a secondary bevel.
