Electro etching already stripped busse

Hey guys I remember seeing threads a few months back about etching. It seems like the electro etching is the most efficient. I also thought it was much easier to etch first and then strip. I can't find the thread even with my Google Fu. Also is it possible to etch the Busse logo on something that's barely visible? I have a double cut tankbuster that the previous person lightly sanded to a satin finish. It's beautiful but The busse is barely visible. I'd like to practice on others before I attempt this one. Thanks.

The good part about etching with the coating still on the blade is that the coating creates a "Resist" to block or cover raw steel. Etching post stripping is a gamble that you can "Contain" the etchant in a "Faint/barely visible" factory etch. IF the etchant runs out of the etch you will have some serious polishing to deal with. Personally I wouldn't attempt to etch if not 100% sure the solution will stay on the letters without running!!!! Get a piece of raw steel and try etching see if the liquid runs where it wants before doing the Knife....

Can be done, but you'd have to have a logo-shaped cut-out made from some kind of resist material. Good tape maybe? I've seen in industrial applications where a thin piece of metal is used with an electro-etcher. Fiddleback Forge does their logos on the knife spine this way (there was a pic posted in last week's "Behind the scenes" thread over there I believe.

Edit: I was wrong, was over on their Instgram feed: HERE. Another one HERE.

There is a stencil material available but you have to be able to replicate the original LOGO don't know how that would go over with the manufacturer. I use Stencils on blades I make and sure would not want someone else replicating them...just sayin' you might be treading on shaky ground...Replicating BUSSE LOGO's.

Finding the right Roman font shouldn't be too hard for the standard all caps BUSSE logo. I wouldn't think Jerry would have a problem with someone trying to keep his logo on one of his knives as long as you weren't switching up logos, like putting the BUSSE logo on a battle grade blade.

I'd be cautious stripping a blade since they started putting in intentional die grinder etching on the blades. You might strip it and find deep engravings like a drunken monkey had access to a dremel

OP could "roll on" a light epoxy and hope that the etching is deep enough to leave bare metal or rub on wax. If you can cover up the blade and leave only the etch exposed then you could etch it deeper with electro or acid

Clear fingernail polish would be your best bet for a resist. Hell of a gamble though...

If you plan to practice first on a coated blade you should get good results with chemical electro etching. I use custom stencils with chemicals for stainless or carbon steels and a Power Supply however others use car battery or even a series of 9v batteries with differing degrees of success. I would personally wait for the "SPA" to open up and send that puppy in for a proper Etching then you have it done with proper font and size and in the mean time use it and enjoy it!!!!

Yea I'll probably hold off on the Tankbuster for now but I'm hoping to etch/strip some CG's soon. Thanks for all the info gentlemen.

The only thing I would add when etching on coated blades use AC voltage for the etching. Get it the depth you desire and clean it really well then etch it on DC voltage to blacken it and make it really pop.

This isn't really a thing is it?

I cannot comment on his post in particular, but you can see the machine-marks under the coating on my Rodent 9 - I bet they actually help the coating adhere

I probably should have etched the "SWAMP RAT" logo in before I took the blade to the grinder to thin the edge some :p
