You probably only etched using DC. DC etches well, but leaves a "patina-like" coloring behind.
Etching w/ low voltage AC (25V or so), what comes out of something on the order of a doorbell transformer, will provide a "blacker" result.
Most folks using both will use DC to get the etch to the desired depth and then use the AC just to blacken it.
