I found a stainless Case medium stockman (6344) from the 80's at a garage sale for $5. It had two good blades that don't even seem to have been sharpened, so I figured it would make a cheap user. The tip and the spine of the sheepsfoot blade looks like they were melted by contact with live current. Would the rest of the sheepsfoot blade be affected by contact, or can the tip be restored to useful by stoning off the bad parts reshaping the spine and the tip? Thanks.

The damage was pretty localized. I reprofiled the damaged blade with diamond hones. I could feel a bit of a difference in hardness in the affected areas. While there is no visible damage left (the bad parts having been filed off), I'll see how it holds up under normal use.

Hey right on,

If i bought it for $5 bucks an i could clean it up again, i wouldnt worry about the one blade losing its temper and such, as long as it doesn't look all screwed up, there is more then one blade right.

It probably is all ok, the edge may be weakened a bit, but how much are you going to throw at a $5 garage sale knife anyways?:D

You probably wont notice any difference man.

Yup, all us men are at one or another point, bargain hunters and scavengers and sometimes it pays off..sometimes is costs more, thats life.

Let us know she appears to hold up for you.

The damaged blade sharpened up well. Used it to cut up boxed as we did spring cleaning, and it cut as well as the other two blades. I guess the damage was localized to the areas that looked bad. The rest of the knife was in great shape (one bolster had a small ding in it from being dropped, probably when it got zapped). I had often passed this model up because it was on the small side, but having tried this one I kinda like it. Nice little knife for a few bucks.
