Ive been looking at electronic hearing protection recently and wanted to know what you guys use. What should they be rated for? I've seen 85db thrown around a lot but what is that good for? I shoot outdoors and the loudest I'll come in contact with is an AR or 2 or 3 12ga shot at once. Is 85 decibels enough? Also what's the battery life like? And what should a good pair cost? I know a guy could just go get a $200 set and they'd work great but I'm looking for some around $50-$60 if that's not to cheap. Can anyone recommend a good model/brand? I know this is a lot of questions. Hopefully someone can answer them! :)

A decent pair of muffs that protect against sudden loud noises (ie gunfire) but do not impede ordinary sounds such as conversation are not expensive. Check with an outdoors or shooting sports store. I use muffs at the rifle and pistol range (particularly nice for when the guy with the 50 BMG rifle sets up at the bench next to you) and use inexpensive ear plugs for skeet and sporting clays.

Thanks guys, I guess I made this a little more complicated than it needed to be lol. Those are also a pair of muffs I'd been looking at. Opened and closed.

One thing to think about is that some of the 'better' muffs can be used amplify the ambient sounds. I like this feature when shooting indoor matches because I wear plugs and muffs during them. By turning up the volume on the muffs I can easily hear everyone speaking but still have the protection of doubling up when the shooting starts.
