From time to time I see the question asked about what is in Cold Steel's proprietary steel that goes by the moniker of Carbon V.
It kind of pisses me off when a company tries to tout some mystery steel off on it's customers because, like most of you, I wanna KNOW what I'm shelling out my hard earned money on.
This analysis comes from a chemical test that Wayne Goddard had done on one of the original Trailmaster Bowies.

Carbon V
Carbon .95%
Manganese .46%
Silicon .16%
Chromium .48%
Vanadium .19%

with the bulk being Iron, naturally.

This may vary slightly because CS has been rumoured to change the steel from time to time.

I hope this gives those of you who have had this question kicking around in your minds for awhile some semblance of relief.

All the best,
Mike U.

Is this similar to any other steels?

50100 would be close with a nominal 1.00% carbon and 0.50% Chromium content.

Carbon V is rumored to be the same or similar to Camillus's 0176-6C.

So, would the difference be negligable? What companies/knives use 50100?

The numbers are close enough to be within the variation range for 50100, except for the Vanadium, which is something commonly added to steels for grain refinement.

I don't know of any knife advertised as using 50100.
