Is there a history behind these? Some sort of task/s they were built for/excelled at?
I just can't see the functionality with these, and I am trying to wrap my mind around them.

That was a great read, and shame on you for posting it at such a late hour. It took me down one of those Internet rabbit holes that ends with me looking at the clock and calculating how many hours I have until the alarm goes off, which is never a good thing. I had always breezed by these knives because I couldn't see the functionality in them. After my research last night I'm much more curious about them. Does anybody here use a sunfish pattern with any regularity? It's obviously going to be a bear to carry, but I'm wondering about throwing it in with my camping gear.

I would have posted this in the linked thread, but didn't feel necroing an 11 year old thread would be appreciated.

Thanks CL, great read to share with my wife. One of my wedding gifts to her was my grandmothers old Sunfish she kept in the drawer of her end table with all her crochet & craft stuff. As a child I always saw her using it for her craft stuff. I don't believe that's what its original design was for. I can not tell you brand off top of my head, but when wife gets home will see if I can get a pic. Good day all.

I find the sunfish much more practical than I would have thought. I often toss it in my back pocket when I get to work in the morning. Stout and heavy but my #36 slices like crazy with its broad, thinly ground blade. I can easily pinch it open but it takes a firm effort to close, just as it should be. Someone nailed the cam geometry on this one.

Great knives folks, the elephant toes are one of my favorite patterns. I made an attempt at one of my best buds birthdays the year before to get him to appreciate traditionals and gave him a medium stockman but it didn't seem to take, so I gave him a Becker Necker for Christmas and he gave me this elephant toe. Awesome info on the link too.

Kinda surprised I don't see more love for the elephant toe around here....
