I paid good money for an old Elgin self winder and was just curious if anyone
has any idea if I paid to much. It is self setting and has 17 jewels whatever
that means. I paid 50 dollars, was I ripped off or what? It still keeps great
time. So if there are any Elgin fans please speak up

Assuming you are not just being repetitious and mean "self winding" when you say "self setting".....just what is meant by "self setting"??? I'm not aware of such an animal.....but then I've only been intensely interested in most aspects of horology for a little over 35 years and am always open to continuing my education therein.

Well there are quite a few new watches that are 'self-setting' in the sense that they automatically sync with the atomic standard in CO.
(Casio waveceptor for instance)

But that's an entirely different animal. ;)

The truth be known I thought I was mispelling self winding so I thought that
I would use "self setting" instead of self winding. Anywho does anyone know
were I can find out the facts behind my 17 jewel self winding elgin watch?
I read it maybe came from the early 60's and that action was imported from
the swiss.
