Eliminate vise jaw lifting

I've noticed my vise jaw lifting sometimes, while milling my liners.

I thought I was climb milling but I reset the base in the vice and it was fine.

How to counter act this motion in a vise when tightening up stock??

What kind of vise are you using?

This is where angle lock style vises typically shine, and the more expensive vises typically work the best, but the imports aren't exactly terrible either.

I use a dead blow style mallet to "set" my parts tightly against the vise and/or parallels as I'm tightening the vise. Depending on the shape of the parts, you may have to crank down on the vise a little tighter than normal. I have a quick handle, but sometimes pull out a longer handle if I need a little more leverage. Obviously this depends on how thick/solid the part is too, but if it's really thin or flimsy, I'll usually try to clamp or glue it to a block and take lighter passes on the mill.

Also, make sure your jaw bolts are as tight as you can make them. They shouldn't wiggle or move while the vise is open.

Ok my vise jaws are not lifting while I'm milling.
The tightening jaw lifts up just s hair when I put my block in it.

The block is holding my liners, that I only take off just enough to relieve them.

Maybe a better mill vise would be better..

ive seen milling vise with anti- jaw lifting in them.

Taximany - Do you use a mallet or other way to force your work back down against the parallels? Even Good vices can lift a tiny amount. If not, try half or partial tightening, smack it back flat, and tighten the rest of the way.

I've never tried that
But I will now.
Maybe that's all it needs

Here's a great vid, the first in a series about milling and lathe work. In this first one, he shows good clamping technique in the vise.
