Hello! I'm a "newbie" to the forum, this is my first post and kinda' hate to start with a question but I guess that's as good a way as any. I have a really nice old Schrade Walden that has some moderate side-to-side wobble in the blades when open. Can somebody tell me how to lessen or eliminate this, please? Also, I have heard it is possible to take a pocketknife apart with a razor blade. Really?:jerkit:

I do not know the construction of that knife but there are a lot of possibilities in knives from cheap modern ones with plastic spacers that can be replaced with good metal ones to peening pins lightly to tighten ones with pin construction. I suspect that this knife is pinned so peening is the probable solution but if you really want the knife to work right and it has value to you I sugest sending the knife to someone who knows exactly what needs to be done to correct the problem. I am sure that others with a ton more experience than I will eventually see this post and may be able to better advise you. My experience is with newer knives and replacing the plastic spacers in cheap knives I am working with to learn more about knives their construction.

For anything but an original Schrade, you'd be right on saying it could be peined. However, Schrades used the Swinden keyhole construction- the pin has a head like a concrete nail that slips into a slot on the bolster. You can tap all day long without it working.

How bad is it? I've had peining work on Schrades, but only if there is very minor wobble. The construction is such that major wobble is pretty rare.

It's really bad, holding the knife in your fingers with the clip blade open it will shake back & forth. Correcting my previous post, it is a Schrade, not a Schrade-Walden, and the pattern number is 895. I'll try light peening. Thanks!
