I'm looking for some opinions on custom folders by A. Elishewitz. How would would you rate them in terms of quality, durability, and value. Thanks in advance :)

I own a Trans Metal, which is a knife designed by Joel Pirella and made by Allen. This is one heck of a knife. The action is as smooth as any knife I have ever used. The blade came hair popping sharp.

I would not hesitate to recommend that you purchase one of Allen's knives. They look great, they feel great and they work great.

There have been some unflattering comments about some of Allan's knives over the last few years. All I can say is the Elishewitzs I have are superb. Your best bet is to buy direct from him or from a very reputable dealer like Les Robertson.
I have nothing but positive experiences with Elishewitz [Mr and Mrs].

I own several of Allen's customs and love them dearly. The interactions I have had with Allen and Valerie have been first rate all the way.

Allen and Valerie are great people. They are also super nice. The knives can be dressy and be use hard at the same time. Look through his website. It is nice and I love the new models. Find one that fit your needs and you will be happy.

His work is absolutely fantastic ! And his customer service is exceptional.

Definitely worth the buy ! You have to have at least one for a EDC !

Allen does some great work and I've had nothing but pleasant dealings with him and his wife Valerie when I got my Cortex in CF/Cocobolo. Mine is very well made, with a good, precise lockup and smooth opening. I'm also big fan of his bolster locks and have been planning to get a persian done in this style. There are usually a few knives available at his website.

Thanks for all the helpful responses guys. One of his knives is definitely at the top of my list. All I have to do now is decide which one...:)

I have 2 of his customs that I've purchased within the last year. Both are top rate. Both Alan and Valerie are are extremely pleasant to deal with.

I have a couple of his folders and just picked up one of his new auto's :D

I've never had any complaints with any of his work and service. I special ordered a MARS from him last year and they said it would be about six months. Well, six "weeks" later it was in my hands and perfect!

I was reading on his website that he was going to return doing ALL the work in his own shop and that would decrease production. That may help the value in the future.

That's a nice lookin' knife you got there kingknives. :) That damascus blade looks pretty sharp with the wood inlays. I just wish more of the top custom makers would venture into the realm of automatics from time to time...

Allen's knives are very well made and designed.
One of Allen's great advantages is his willingness to try new things, as a result his designs will always be on the cutting edge.

Since Allen and Valerie have been together, I have seen a very favorable direction taken in Allen's knives.

I have owned many of his knives in the past and I can truly say his latest are the finest he has made.

Now, if Allen would just make a full 4" recurve, flat ground with a Bolster Lock I would just have to buy one :)

Thanks Anthony... Let me ask you a quick question: what exactly is a bolster lock? - I'm not familiar with them. Are they more along the lines of a frame lock or a liner lock? I know that some of A.E.'s new folders have the bolster lock, but I've never actually seen one. By the way, I love the old Italian proverb! ;)

This belongs in the Custom forum. The bolster lock is where the bolster and liner are of one piece of metal. This takes breathtaking machine work. The handle material sits on top of it and does not move. This gives it the strenght properties of an integral lock combined with a very attractive appearance.

Anthony

Your articles and comments in the various knife mags are always appreciated.

I agree with your comments. I look forward to the Nov. NY Custom Knife Show. No doubt I will add another Elishewitz to my collection.

They are not just "pretty". They are real users.:)

Thanks for moving this over, Dave!

I have never handled a knife by Allen that was not excellent. Give him a call. It will be hard to decide in the end if you like the knife more than you enjoyed working with him and Val (his wife).

I have an Elishewitz Persian in my pocket as I type this, and all I can tell you is I that I couldn't be happier with it.
Also, Allen and Valerie are a pleasure to work with.

I'm fortunate enough to have one of Allen's early autos, a Mars D/A model (with a leaf spring!!)

The knife was my EDC for quite some time, holding up to both hard work and sharpening to keep a razor edge.

After more carry and use than most customs ever see, I had the lack of discretion to show to a friend not familiar with D/A's (though a knife person!) and sure enough, in the open position..."What does the button do?"...tink....as the leaf sprink fall to the ground!!!!!!

A phone call to Valerie, a little postage and a *very* minimal wait; good as new!!!!!!!!!

My thanks to Allen and Valerie; if you've never handled an Elishewitz you really owe it to yourself to do so.
