I've always wondered why Elishewitz's knives did not get more exposure here on the forums. Today at the show I had the opportunity to hold some of his knives that the dealers had.

I really like them and plan to make one my next custom purchase.

Going to his page tonight I saw that he has the Monolock and the Bolster-Lock, could someone describe the difference between the two?

All of the ones I looked at today either appeared to be frame locks or liner locks, so now I'm confused:confused:

The bolster-lock is a modified frame lock. The handle slab is machined so that an inlay fits over part of the lockbar, leaving a section exposed along the bolster of the handle. This allows your grip on the knife to re-enforce the lockbar and increases the amount of surface it has to contact the blade tang.

Thanks stjames, I thought they must be very similar.

Any preference of one over the other? Seems like the Bolster lock may have all the advantages of a frame lock plus a little extra...

The bolster lock allows a knife to be dressed up a little more, but for functionality I prefer the frame lock. Just keep in mind that the quality of the lock depends on the work of the maker, like anything else.

When cruising his site a couple of days ago I noticed he has a new locking system called the E-Lock. It looks like it can be used on a manual knife or a presentation auto where the knife opens automatically part way and then the user opens it the rest of the way. This looks very interesting and I am planning on contacting Allen and finding out more about this new lock of his.

Allen's work has always caught my attention. The designs are awesome. The monolock is a frame lock. Really great for use. The Bolster lock is a monolock but has inlays of CF, G-10, wood and other materials. They both look great. The locks are really strong too. You can't go wrong with either one. Just contact Allen, he will help you decide which one is good for you. Hope this helps.

Allen's bolster lock is basically a framelock with a twist.
The Janus I have is a titanium framelock with the outside precision milled to accept a scale (Buffalo horn in this case). This gives the look of a bolstered knife for those who want the benefits of the framelocks stronger lock without the slab sided look usually associated with the breed.

The bottom picture shows the lockup.

Thanks for all of your help guys. I just finished ordering this Elishewitz from a vendor who was at the Ohio show this weekend.

I got to hold the knife at the show and it was between this and DDR's Mini Madd Maxx. Well, I bought the Madd Maxx at the show and decided later that I also wanted this one.

This will be my 3rd custom folder the first of which was a Large Hawkbill TNT :p

Man, customs are more addicting than crack... :)
