So I'm looking for two knives - and HOPE you can help point me in the right direction?

1) When I was a kid my dad always had very old school stag horn type blades (one long one short). Of course he died before I ever got a chance to ask him about them - but I've been left with a nagging sense that these old-school blades are 'gentlemen's knives'..

Now at 30-something, my best friend is in his 40's, from Europe and I'd like to get him a nice gift. He wears suits, drinks wine, and is pretty cultured.. He also lives in a thrid world country - so I'm torn between getting him a nice 'show' knife and something more substantial.

I guess I'm looking for something that has that 'old school stag' feel (something bespoke) and yet thin enough to clip into a pocket and that would have something useful like a single corkscrew (don't want a bunch of gadgets) - just a high end, single blade with corkscrew would be GREAT.. But it's got to be nice - $150 - 300 range. I want him to feel like I've given him a vintage Mont Blanc if that makes sense...

For myself - I live in an even worse third world country where foreigners get shot all the time, and crap goes down all too often.
I'm looking for a really good blade that I can learn with and use for defense. I don't ever want to draw it - but when I do I hope to be skilled with how to use it. I already have some defense training..

I'm looking at the Emerson/Perrin LaGriffe for concealed and the CQC-12 for protection.. However I'm not sold on the CQC... I want something similar but a lower profile and more 'urban' - I mean I want the meanest low profile blade out there that is all business.

So my questions would be - what would you recommend for my friend (old school blade with corkscrew' and what would you recommend for a folding defense blade (for me). I prefer the carbon fiber, all business black blade and handle.. the only reason I'll be carrying is for protection..

Thanks!

I agree with the previous posts, so I'll tackle the next section.

Choosing a knife for self defense isn't something that should be taken lightly. I am not an expert, but I have spent enough time reading the advice of experts to know that simply buying a hardcore knife and carrying it around will not help much. Have you trained to use a knife to defend yourself and others?

I'd buy a rubber training knife to go along with the blade you choose, I also agree with the others of that knife site that psycho pulled up, very classy.

The Laguiole knives are beautiful - thanks so much for the link - I'm going to order one of the custom ones and it's the PERFECT gift.. Again thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

As far as my personal knife, I'll probably go with the Emerson Comrade CQC-12.
and yes I'll surely get a training knife as well.

Thanks!

I don't know what you think about CRK sebenza, I think a small sebenza would fit the bill. I know it isn't necessarily a gent's knife as it truly is a work horse, I think a natural handled gents knife is a better gift, but the sebenza is a class act worker too.

You might want to check out the Spyderco Civilian. It was designed specifically for self-defense, and there are training programs for it. As a slasher, it can cover your retreat, which is usually your best tactic in a knife fight. You can get the Civilian in CF, but it is not much of a utility knife. You are right in that training is the key.

you already have probably one of the best production folders around for SD why bother with another? hey if ya just want another knife go for it but a CQC12 is gonna do anything say a spyderco civilian is gonna do, plus has stabbing ability (unlike the civvy), a better lock, is thin and easy to carry/conceal, its my favorite production emerson by far.

oh, a '12 will also slash quite well FWIW.

You might consider looking for a Ayoob. I thought they did a nice job with that one at Spyderco.

I agree with the support for the Emrson. I loved the Syderco Police, but did have a concern my hand might slide up the thin metal frame. It never did, but it is "slick" comapred to the G10 of the Emerson.

YMMV
