I have recently added several pieces in elk stag to my growing GEC collection. The little half congress I picked up at BLADE still amazes me in that it looks like very fine ancient mammoth ivory to me, just gorgeous. And like other natural stag and horn materials, elk stag has a variety of "looks" and textures. Following is a group shot, followed by individual photos of the knives. ENJOY!!

And fellas (and especially Kerry ;)) they have been listening to us about both the sharpening and the underblading. Anyone who has bought a 2011 built knife has noticed the improved edges, but look at the difference in underblading between my 2010 orange bone #72 and this 2011 one in elk stag-- a huge improvement!

Jeff, Fine collection you've got there Sir! That
Half Congress does look like Mammoth, Very nice indeed!
Thanks for sharing...

Jeff,

When you handed me that half congress at Blade I would have sworn it was mammoth ivory...never would have guess smooth elk stag. Good stuff...

Well, very nice knives... That stag is very, very beautiful.

Looking forward to see newer pics of that knives. They seemed to be produced very well...

Kind regards
Andi

Some good looking knives, Jeff, with a lot of variety.

I don't see a lot of elk stag in general and this Scagel reproduction by P.J. Tomes (forged 52100) is the only one I own:

Great looking knives there, guys!

I particularly like the ones that have the dark black and white colors like the Upland Hunter and #72 in Jeff's, photos and the Toothpick in biglmbass's photos. I have noticed that the more recent ones have this appearance. Looks gorgeous!

This 538208 Muskrat is the only Elk scaled knife I own but I really want to get some of those newer ones.

Elliot: That Tomes looks more like Moose than elk. I tried a few in moose...but really moves a lot and curls to the hot side even when kept cool!! Tough to deal with. Are these elk handles sheds ya think? They do all look great.

John, I can't say for certain as I traded into the knife with a forum buddy. But as I recall, the original receipt (which I have somewhere around here) indicates "elk" on it by the maker (though I suppose it's possible that he was in error).

Don't know if either of these give you more to go on...

Elk is fast becoming a favorite of mine as well. Your half congress looks fantastic, BTW.

Bass, I really like the top one of your half congresses-- it has the same weathered, stressed look of mine, only whiter. Very nice!

Trand, you posted just as I was. Did your elk #72 come with the lesser underblading as mine did? I hope this is a positive trend, and not just a one off.

Elk's a lot more delicate to work with than stag as far as the "bark" thickness, buff it too much and you wind up with something that looks more like bone than stag. The Tomes knife is a great example of what it looks like in its natural state on the smoother sections.

Both my Elk and Red Wine had less underblading with the Red Wine having the least. It looks like it may have a little more than yours. I don't have my Burnt Orange anymore but had a Red Stag to compare to. Unfortunately my stainless Burnt Stag had just as much as the Red Elk. It has nice stag so I can live with it.

Very nice, Trand. I need to get one of those spear-bladed 25's like yours.
Thanks Tom. Believe it or not but it was my very first GEC. I added some more pics but I could only find old ones. I guess I'll have to break out the camera this weekend...
