Found this very interesting page that documents these guys making a canoe out of Elm bark. Check it out. I wasn't aware this could be done with anything other than Birch bark.

This book inspired me some years ago to make a skin boat from deer hides.

It was a fun project. I used split willow and hickory for the frame and willow bark for the lashings.

There was a book written by Jim Dina about his adventures along a river in an elm bark canoe that he built. I checked Amazon, but no hit - it might be a self-published book. I'll have to check when I go home.

I think I leafed through that book. Wasn't it him and one other gentleman?

Very impressive bit of bushcraft. Skinning a standing tree must be a real chore. Mac
