First time posting in here, hope it's in the right spot for a little advice.

I just picked up an Elmax blank and I didn't realize it wasn't heat treated. Yeah, shoulda read the fine print and all but that's cool it'll be a fun project.
Question is: Who, on the forum could do a heat treat for me? I'll also need a little advice as to the prep of the blank beforehand. Grinding and thickness and all that. I don't want to overdo it.

Any advice is welcome. Thanks all.

The knife can be shaped and sanded using normal procedures found in the Stickies. Once shaped and sanded to 400 grit, and the edge being about .010" thick, it will be ready for HT. You can send it to many knife supply companies ( Texas Knife Supply, K&G, Jantz, etc.), True Grit, Peter's HT, Paul Bos, or post a thread in "Services wanted' in The Exchange.

If you profile said more than USA, it would be easier to direct you to a local HT source.

Excellent! thanks for the information and pointing me in the right direction. And I live in the Adirondack, NY region.
I've been doing some searching around and am gathering all of the necessary gear that I don't already have and have procured a bigger shop space so I can eventually move on to bigger and better things. Time to put my 20+ years of metal fabrication experience to work again.

Filling out the info helps, but to be honest "Foothills of the Adirondacks" isn't really useful info. Lake Placid, NY is a place. There are a bunch of makers and several knifemaker groups in your area...as well as a first class knifemaker school.

I would suggest Peter's HT in PA. It is only a few mountains away :)

It brings more of a picture to mind rather than a mundane name of my little town but I see your point. So much for the dramatic expression then, I'm off to add the exact locale to my profile. It's temporary though, I'm getting the hell outta this snowbank ASAP! or as soon as I can retire anyway. ;)

The knifemaker school sounds interesting. I've heard rumor over the years but have always been too busy with my own (and others) metalwork to inquire further. I'll look into it. Thank you.

That's more like it!
What that tells me is the Ashokan Seminar each fall is two hours due south of you. Lots of learning and meeting the New England guys there. I would encourage you to attend.

Thanks, I've stumbled across that a few times around here and just saw their site. Looks good. I'll contact them for some more info.
Also found another about an hour to the north of me that I'll check out for seminars in the spring and fall.
