Anybody have some information to share on this particular material? How would it compare to the more commonly used blade steel. Thanks.

Elmax is a mold steel put out by Bohler/Uddeholm. Their page on it is at the site below:

The data sheet for Elmax:

It looks like a pretty good mix, maybe a little brittle with the 18% Cr.

I wish Uddeholm would put their Vanadis 4 RSP tool steel out in knifemaker sizes. It looks like it would be a High C version of CPM 3V.

At this point, none of these steels are easy to get in thin flat bars like you can get S30V and 3V in with a phone call to Crucible.

I don't see an advantage over Crucible's CPM. BTW with CPM steels, because of the finer more uniformly distributed carbides you can get away with higher carbon without brittleness problems.

If I were to perhaps play with a particlate steels in a custom mix, what would you suggest Mr. C ?

Think structured CPM steels :)

That's a tough question Mark. From the user standpoint ? What use ? For the Maker ? I have always been impressed with advantages of the CPM types .I've used a Sebenza as EDC for a couple of years and I'm very impressed by the S30V. Prior to that I used a 154CM ,also excellent and I wonder if the CPM 154CM might be a good compromise , easier for the maker ,but great for the user. ...The prototype CPM 154CM is in the hands of some makers so we'll know soon.????

Comparing these steel may be nonsense but "akee" has solved my problem. In my country I've been searching for a SS and there was no good alternative to D2. Because so much kitchenware requests :barf: recently D2 was not the best solution as it is semi-SS. I saw this thread and I searched Google in Tukish language and voila :D , There is a distributor of Elmax in Turkey. Monday I will contact them.

"akee", I know you didnt meant to but thanks, you saved my a$$... :p

Elmax is a powdered steel just like the CPM's. In talking to their people, their steel is cleaner and has better toughness. That Vanadis 4 mentioned above is right on par with 3V and they are putting a version out soon that is much tougher than 3V. They are also looking at getting sheet into the US for the knifemakers.

Don't thank me yet! You might be cursing me later on!

From what little information that I could gather, this is suppose to be a tough material to work with. Very damaging to equipment, so they said.

Anyway, it would be real nice if you could post you findings after your project is completed. Thanks.

hi havent used the elmax yet but have some on order have used a lot of vanadis 4 it is the best knife steel i have come across for using knives used my test knife to field dress 40 plus deer and pigs and still razor sharp .used it to cut some fencing wire when i forgot the cutters one day very small edge dents sharpend out in a couple of minits on the stone .my every day steel is boler n690 which is a good workhorse most boler steels are freely aviable here if some one wants some let me know should be able to work something out
cheers john ;)

:) cheers mete spelling has never been a strong suit i offered because people have said they cant buy small stock and bohler steel is freely avialable here
cheers john
