Elmax sharpening: leave it toothy or go for a more refined edge? Opinions and experience would be welcomed.

I had a ZT0566 with an Elmax blade and you could get it extremely sharp going up to a 20K Suehiro stone without stropping it,it would get so sharp it would cut arm hairs off without even putting the blade against your skin.

I never tried it toothy to see if it liked it or not, what do you have for sharpening supplied and do you sharpen freehand or with a system.

I used to use diamonds first then Chosera's t finish it followed by a 10 and 20K Suehiro.

Lansky setup with standard and diamond stones, Sharpmaker with standard rods and Lansky rod sets with diamond rods and standard.

I worked on it a bit this week and got it to and acceptable level but still need to touch up the fist inch towards the tip.

To be honest I would look into getting a better system then a Lansky if you can afford it,I had one and they are painfully slow when compared to a system that use's 6 inch long edge pro format stones.

I would look into a Hapstone that use's clamp's you can pick new ones up fairly cheap and they are really decent systems,I use a TSProf K03 but a lot of people won't spend the money on a K03 I can understand that but the Hapstones are priced very good if you ask me.

JBC6650 JBC6650 If you do go with a better system I would go with diamond stones for doing the heavy lifting and using Chosera stones from 1 to 5K or even 8K and if you want to go high as 8K get a Suehiro G8 stone from Gritomatic they are best 8K stone on the market.

Myself personally I like using the Venev stones then the 1K and 5K Chosera stones for most edge's and if I want a higher grit finish I go to the G8 every time.

Schmedium grit is my preference. About a 600-1200 grit edge on Elmax has always been excellent working range on my elmax blades. Can depend a bit on the hardness too. A point one way or the other can make a pretty big difference in its performance.

I have a ZT 0801 in Elmax sharpened on a Lanky system. I did diamond all the way through and finished with ultra fine and sapphire, at 20 deg. (I don't recall if I re-profiled when I originally got it 2 years ago or if that was factory) and its held up very well through a couple sharpenings and stropping to maintain.
I wont say its my most carried knife but I do carry it often. In fact I am very impressed with this particular steel in this particular knife. It took a nice edge rather easily, IMO.
I recently got a Guardian Tactical OTF 035 with Elmax just to have another example. Ive only touched up the edge (25deg. factory) a little for now but the potential is there when I get the time to really get at it.

We put an edge of the Feather DE shaving razor on a set of kitchen knives in Elmax.
