A few years ago Ellmax was the up and coming steel it seemed everyone must have for a knife. Now I see very few knives made of it. Is there something about Elmax I have not heard about?

How does it compare price wise to new, fashionable stuff? It clearly is good, and I value bang for buck. (And I'm looking for a posh Sandvik on occasion.)

My understanding is that Elmax was meant to be a lower cost alternative to M390. Funny how some people can be okay with budget steels while at the same time dislike a steel for being only "second best."

I think getting Elmax cost wise skyrocketed recently. I can't remember if the price was raised or it was tariffs or something. S45VN IIRC is supposed to be very similar and made in the US.

I just used some Elmax b/c I couldnt get 20CV. It finished really nicely, I didnt test the edge much but grinding/sharpening was a breeze. I think its gonna be my go to high wear stainless.

Interesting, thanks for your replys. Only 4 replys of which there is only 1 user. Is it a mystery steel, LOL

There was a problem with the can on Elmax a while back and grinding it off was troublesome from what I’ve read. AKS refused to carry it because knifemakers were complaing about it and they don’t put stuff out if it’s not great quality.
I bought some a while back from a member on here that purchased a half sheet or so. It was clean and grinded nicely. When I went to buy more, the tariffs almost doubled the price for the guy that bought the half sheet. I don’t have a ton of experience with it, but I liked it and would use more if it wasn’t as expensive as it was.
Just like A.McPherson said, it’s not as popular right now.
