This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a

remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian

television Commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant

remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most

generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out

of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and

forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying

even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who

propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the

streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries

in to help. This spring, 59 American communities

were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the

Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now

newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering

Americans.

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the

moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk

about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American

technocracy, and you find men on the moon -not once, but several times -

and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store

window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued

and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they

are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at

home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through

age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad

and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose.

Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other

people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to

the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even

during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and

I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around.

They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do,

they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over

their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

I think it's past time for America to put her foot down.
We should close our borders quit sending foreign aid and concentrate
on restoring America to what it used to be.
The hell with all other countries, damn the torpedoes and full speed a head, and my the gods have pity for those that get in the way for I'll have none!

"They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do,

Once again like Rusty and some others I have had to delete the words I had written.

This was a good article to read, but it doesn't suprise me that a Canadian would write it, they've traditionally been a friend of our country. Thanks to John Powell for finding this and to Uncle Bill for posting it.

I also want to say that let's all please remember that not all foreigners are to blame for this. Our country has always been a symbol of freedom and success to the rest of the world, influencing possitive change for two-hundred years. We've also been a safe haven for those who wanted to flee poverty, war, and tyranny. That's one of the things that makes our country special, and closing our doors to all foreigners would take it away.

We also should remember the response we've gotten from other nations. Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, India and others have expressed support. Nato has said that this situation is an attack on Nato, not just the US, which likely means actually military support is there if we want it. Russia has both given us important information about Bin Laden et.al. and also said it openly supports the potential use of force against Bin Laden or any nation harbouring him. Those are strong words, and it is quite possible that the US will be leading a military coalition including Nato AND Russia if force is indead used.

I'm just glad to see how everyone has come together because of this. I think it's something to be said for us as a nation that even today, we fight amongst each other tooth and nail, but if somebody else attacks one of us, we all stand up.

Terrorisom is as old as war it self. The holding of hostages, loved ones. family or friends. Our choice is to take every terrorist out, punish every country that lends help, funds, or refuge. If this does not happen, a nuclear device or another device of mass destruction will be used against our country. We do not like this type of action, but it now has become them , or us. Make no mistake, this will take time. Every thing is not OK, life will not be the same, EVER ! We have not seen the end of these radical suicide killers. Every American must understand that it will take force of a radical nature to keep our freedom.

I hope that this tragedy will reinforce how much ALL of us need to work TOGETHER. No one is isolated. If they can do this to America, they can do this to anyone. We must stand together, or fall one by one. United we stand all around the world, or divided we fall at the feet of terror.

Short and to the point, Floyd, and absolutely accurate as far as I can tell. Thanks and thanks, all.

I have to say I agree with much of what has been said here, but of course, if I agreed with everything, I wouldn't need:rolleyes: to post. We all need to vent and I need to rant too. I probably will seem like a sanctimonious prune, so I'll beg your forgiveness in advance. Here goes:

I'm never sure how best to say this, but let me give it a try. It is important to keep our freedom. It is important to keep that which has made this country great (and, of course, to get rid of what prevents us from being even better;)).

We have to try (no matter how hard it is) to remember that one of our most important components of freedom is that we (as a country) do not rush to judgement. However satisfying it might seem right now to turn Osama bin Ladin's immediate surroundings into a fiery hell -- however satisfying it might seem right now to close our borders to all "outsiders" -- however satisfying it might seem right now to clamp down severely on anyone who could be a potential terrorist, if we rush to judgement, bring Joe McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover back from the dead and turn the country over to them and their methods, we lose. We would lose our freedom and, worse, our humanity.

The terrorists might not consider it "winning" if we did that, but for us, it would definitely be "losing." We could "win" the battle with Osama and even the larger battle with terrorists in general and still lose what makes the USA what it is. That is a large part of what makes you and me different from the terrorists. We have to do it the right way. It isn't enough just to vaporize the terrorists. We have to do it in a way that still lets us hold our heads up and say that we are humans and not beasts.

Terrorists can do the evil that they do only by denying humanity (ours and theirs). They can focus on a single "cause" while denying all other considerations of right and wrong. We cannot do either without sinking to their level. I don't want to become evil. I don't believe that any of my "brothers of the khukuri" want that either.
