What does it mean when you get an email that has absolutly no subject, name or anything ?

I have outlook email and occasionally I get one that shows nothing at all except an envelope ?

Of course I delete it without opening but once I accidently clicked and it opened but there was nothing there, weird........:(

I've been getting those lately also, I assume it's either a phishing attempt or a virus, delete, delete, delete!!!!!!

No subject just means that the person didn't type one. It's sometimes an oversight on the sender's part. I've done it myself. But most legitimate internet users at least have their e-mail program set up to include a return address. E-mail that comes to me with no return address doesn't make it past the spam filters. E-mail that has no subject gets deleted unopened unless I recognize the sender.

I misunderstood you Robbie, the ones I have been getting have no subject, no body no anything, even a return address, just completely blank. Gollnik, do you know what and how those go through?

The Last Confederate, no you did not misunderstand, that is exactly what I have been getting.

Along with many others, these are just a little curious I think.....

Yeah, I can't figure out how they even move through the system with no address.

I have also started getting phishing e-mails that try to get a return confirmation without me having to send a reply. I have software that prevents it, but dang those dirtbags are getting sneaky.

The e-mail system used on the Internet is called smtp. That stands for simple mail transfer protocol. It actually dates back to the 70s. It took the form we use today back in early 80s (I actually did a bit of work on that though I doubt that any of my stuff -- which had to do with adapting mail from bitnet). It's not called simple for no reason. It was originally intended just as a sort of stop-gap until someone could write a better protocol, but nobody ever did, at least that cought on.

All that is necessary to send an smtp e-mail is a to address. Most e-mail programs such as Outlook and Eudora don't allow sending without a reply address, but that is a limitation imposed by the program, not the protocol.

Thank you Gollnick, you amaze me with your knowledge on this kind of stuff...........you seem to know something about everything.........I'm thinking you may be like a sponge. :D ;)
