I received email notifications about messages from a member who bought a knife from me yesterday.

When I shipped the package I hit Reply to the email notification and sent him the tracking number.

Today he asked about the tracking number. I checked the email reply I sent yesterday and it went to spark's email address, not to the buyer.

I don't know if it supposed to work like that, but if so, members need to be careful.

It's an email notification - originating from the system. The people that send you the messages have nothing to do with those. If you want to respond to the person that left you a message, you have to come to the site and message them (unless you exchanged emails, in which case you would use the one provided)

*Edited to add - I'd almost bet that there's wording in the notification telling you not to respond to it.

I might be wrong but I think that in the past, I would do exactly the same, hit reply to the notification and it went to to message sender, not to spark.

You are correct. That was the old Vbulletin days where you could send members an initial email through the forums and then correspond with them by email. That system went away when Spark switched to Xenforo in 2017.

Emails are now strictly notifications of something that happened on the forum. The other member sent you a PM and that email was just letting you know about it. To respond, you have to jump back on the forum and reply by PM/Conversations.

That old email system was quite useful and one of the few things that was a downgrade by omission after the overall forum upgrade.

You are correct. Still, per my initial message, members should be careful because they will be emailing spark rather than an unmonitored email address which is the standard method for notifications on most websites.

Thank you. I thought as much. That's why I didn't read the fine print. I just used it as I did in the past.

Perhaps they should setup a no-reply@ address for those that do reply so that these messages do not go to spark. That part is unusual.
