Embassy or Rubicon

I won a ZT 0562 in a raffle the other day but don't really care for it. My local shop will take it in as trade since it's NIB and I'm trying to decide on what to snag. Should I go for a NIB Spyderco Embassy DLC/partial serrations or the knife I really want, a Rubicon? He wants $60 and the ZT for the Embassy and hasn't gotten the Rubicon in yet so I'm not sure how much boot he'd want with my ZT.
The only real reason I'm considering the Embassy is I always hear about it being at the top of the heap as far as Spydie autos go, it's discontinued and I'm thinking I might be able to get the Rubicon I want plus some if I use it as trade bait.

Help me decide which route to go! Do I go the direct route and get the Rubicon or get the Embassy and use it as trade bait hoping to get more??

I should add, the Embassy has a sticker price of $210 and the Rubicon will likely be nearly $300 at the shop so I would more than likely have to give up at least $120 and the ZT to get the Rubicon from him as opposed to $60 and the ZT for the Embassy..

I have an Embassy and that thing is bad ass. I would get the Embassy. I have seen the Embassy on The Exchange only once and it didnt last, but have seen the Rubicon a few times and its not discontinued.

I responded on the other forum but I'll add a perspective here. When deciding between knives, I always pick the one that I actually like, not the one that I feel I should like because its rare or because others do. Of course, I'm not really a collector.

Doesn't sound like a fair deal to me regarding the Embassy. As far as the Rubicon, I don't know, I just have never warmed up to that knife. I just don;t like the overall design. Go with your gut and get whatever you like.

Lance, you've been a help with multiple things so far in my Spydie addiction and I think you and the others are right, I'm going to hold off for the Rubicon. The Embassy is cool, is rarer, but of the 5 autos I've had I haven't kept a single one longer than a month. I've wanted a Rubicon since I first saw them and after not winning the Rubicon raffle (the ZT was 2nd place prize), I'm really itching for one now. I already sent an email to my dealer and passed on the Embassy, hopefully the new Spyderco order comes in soon!

Thanks for bringing me to my senses

If an Eta from your dealer is a bit hazy you could always try throwing it on the trade forums and see if you get a bite. You may get a better deal as well.

The Embassy is definitely cool, and prices have definitely risen as supply has become very small on the markets since it was discontinued. Unfortunately, it sounds like the store is trying to screw you over on prices with the proposed deal, the Embassy sold for something like $150 new, prices have risen but not doubled. Sadly, this isn't uncommon with brick and mortar knife stores it seems, which is why I often go and handle knives in them and almost never buy from them.

I don't have any experience with the Embassy because I don't care for autos but I do have a Rubicon that I can tell you about. It's has the best flipping action of all of my flippers (I have 10 flippers...ZTs and Spyders) but it get's the least pocket time of them all. The knife is beautiful and feels fantastic in my hand. I really like the blade shape, the grind, the looks, the pocket clip....but it feels like a fat tuna in my pocket and the ridges on the back-spacer are annoying every time I reach into my pocket. It's so bulky in my pocket that I rarely use it due to the fact that it is uncomfortable to carry.

Take your NIB ZT 562 and stick it here on the Exchange, and sell it yourself. Find out what the cheapest price in on the web, and then advertise it for 20% less with FULL disclosure.
Then you have cash with you if you choose to buy through your local dealer.

I believe that it's a mistake to buy a knife that you don't want, with hopes of selling it again. That's one step too many.

TheGearGuy above did post his honest feelings about the Rubicon. Read it.

That would have been a tough choice for me because I like all three you mentioned, but have none of them yet. I'm sure you will enjoy the Rubicon.

I do have a 562CF on backorder, have been eyeing the Embassy for some time, and almost purchased the Rubicon when it first came out. The only thing that made me hold off on the Rubicon was that it seemed like a chunky monkey. If not for everyday carry, I'm sure it would feel amazing in the hand. And sure looks sweet to the eye. Dangit! Now I want one again. :)

I was at the SFO a few months ago and got to handle the Rubicon (and MANY other knives :roll eyes:) My thoughts were quite similar to yours and that's one reason I mentioned the Slysz Bowie in the sister thread to this one over on the Spyderco forum. The Rubicon is one fine looking blade but if I was buying a high end Spydie to actually carry and use then the Slysz Bowie would win hands down. Sorry, Dubya, not trying to confuse you...Or am I?? hehe.

Totally agree!! The Slysz Bowie is my hands-down favorite Spyderco of them all..without question. I LOVE that knife!

I carried an Embassy for 10 months in Afghanistan. Loved it. Gave it to an incoming 1LT as I left theater, with some regret.

One of the best autos I've handled.

After reading the comments about the Rubicon, I looked up the specs...and can't help but wonder. It isn't long, it isn't heavy...it might be a little wide for it's length; but not really to the point of detriment (IMO). I checked out a couple of videos, and it looks like it would be more comfortable than most of the Spydercos I've handled.
Pocket tuna?? Chunky monkey??
Maybe it's because my primary carry for a couple of years has been a ZT0200 (I'm just now finding a few folders that can compete for pocket time), but I'm not seeing the Rubicon as worthy of those descriptions based on specs, pics, and videos. Granted, real world experience could be totally different; so feel fee to disregard my opinions (I probably would, if the situation was reversed)
To the OP - if the Rubicon appeals to you, go for it. I'd be interested in hearing your opinion after you've had it for a couple weeks.

*edited to add - I just took another look at the picture posted above, and noticed the similarity in shape of the Rubicon to the 0200....probably explains why I don't understand the negative descriptors
