Embassy, the unexpected automatic

I've been in Afghanistan for just over two months now. As a deployed soldier, I'm making pretty good money, and not spending much of it on the food and beer I would ordinarily be buying. And I like knives.

I had a Translucent Manix 2 that I absolutely loved for its strength, sharpness, smooth opening, and light weight, but I gave it away to a soldier who didn't have a knife. While waiting for my favorite knife guy to get more in stock, I perused other Spydercos. I decided to splurge, and ordered an Embassy from Jeff at Cutlery Shoppe last month. The Embassy, in the small online inventory picture, looks to be almost exactly as large as the Devil Jumpmaster.

I moved over 900 kilometers away after I made the order, and my mail finally began to catch up with me last week. When I opened the box, I was amazed. Instead of the hulking automatic I was expecting, the Embassy is almost delicate. Opening is quick and strong, and the lock is very positive. And, OMIGOD, this is a sharp knife. I was laughing the other day at a poster talking about cutting himself as he repeatedly opened his Clipit "as we do". I have owned Spydercos that I carried, and used, every day, for years and never cut myself- but I just brushed the tip against a finger as I was closing it. Several minutes passed before the blood started, the cut was so clean and fine.

Ergonomics are as good, well as a Spyderco. The Embassy appears to be about 1/3 smaller in bulk than my Gerber 06 Tanto, but when I carefully compared the edges, the Embassy's cutting edge is only about 1/4" shorter. Fit and finish are flawless. If I push fairly hard, I can get just a hint of blade movement from side to side, but none up and down.

The Embassy isn't what I expected, but it is a very good size, large enough to be very usable, but small enough to be convenient. Its blade is capable but not over-large. It looks in person like an Olympic athlete, purposeful, and without excess. I like it a lot.
