RIGHT NOW, AN EMERGENCY HAS STRUCK YOUR AREA. There is NO rural or urban/municipal water pressure, and there will not be any water pressure for days, let alone clean water.

Your emergency drill, starting NOW (2135 hours pacific time vancouver), is to get thru the NEXT 48 hours without using the taps. NO CHEATING!

many places to get water from in a house when the water is offline. You can drain the water heater, use the toilet tank, rain barrel, stored water, harvested water (rain, crick, ditch pond, pool, etc)

spend the next 48 hours without municipal water and document it here, what you did, how you dealt with blackwater (feces/urine), how you dealt with basic sanitation and drinking water, how you did it, etc.

lol nice. but i am gonna have to pass as i have to give my little one a bath cause she is dirty as can be. who'da thunk she would like to play in the dirt lol

I got this covered,
in my garage I have 2 500 gallon tanks of pure water
and enough non parishable food to feed 3 people for 5-6 months

also I have a manmade bass pond in my backyard I could filter that and drink it
.
..
...
ok ill play your game.

I just dropped the kids off at the pool and it was MESSY. Gonna jump in the shower and contemplate this thread after :D

earthquake just hit...................EVAC the chilluns from pool , and get that lil one outta the bath and under cover.

I've got all the buckets I use for my aquarium, plus my aquarium, currently unoccupied, and a mess of big rubbermaid bins. there is still a fair bit of snow on the ground out back to shovel, melt and strain. I should be able to get at least 100 gal of water that way, although it may take some inventive snow harvesting. Plus the water heater, and main system should hold quite a bit, that will be drained to prevent contamination. liquid waste will either be poured in the storm drain on the street, or in the weep area beside the house if temps are warmish, otherwise they will be disposed of in the ravine down the street directly. solid waste can likely be bagged and set outside to freeze (it'll freeze over night for sure) and then set for regular trash pickup.
A toilet bucket could be set up in the unattached, unheated garage for this purpose, it stays pretty cold.

should be enough to take care of the three adults in the house.
During summer, there are a few small streams near, but they are all contaminated with city pollution, so it would be a case of rationing just what was in the house until more supply was available, or get out of town, no way that water could be decontaminated within the timeframe.

err, done. the 5,000gal rainwater tank next to my house kind of takes care of this one.

just means: no showers and taking a dump outside.....

^ hahahaha

in my area, that size of water tank would land me in jail! (municipal bylaws/building codes)

Funny that you should put up a thread like this.
The mobile home park that we live in, just had the input water mains break.
They had to shut down the water pumping station for the day to replace the
pipes, so we just lived through a sort of semi-disaster.

We have a water filtration system in our home, and had on hand almost 9
liters of water that we'd just filtered. Additionally, I had a full 18.5 liter jug
of store bought water as a backup.
Out in our addition, I had another 18.5 liter jug of tap water sitting there, so
that's what we used for flushing the toilet and washing up.
We made due with sink baths, and then scooped that water into the toilet
for flushing as well.
In addition to water on hand, we have several jugs of grape juice, so we
weren't hurting for liquids.

By being conscious of our water supply, we made it through the day with
just using the 9 liters of filtered water, and used up a bit of the 18 liters of
tap water I'd stored in the addition for toilet and washing use.

I have bottled water and fruit drinks for consumption and several types of water filters. The 4 types of wet wipes I have aid hygiene and conserve water.

Having lived on boats and off grid, I treat water like the valuable asset it is. Way too many people waste far too much water!

Florence Nightingale once said that her Nurses only needed a pint of water a day to maintain their personal hygiene, and that was in the horrific conditions at the Front, during the Crimean War.

In 1860, she established the Nightingale Training School for nurses at St Thomas' Hospital in London. Once the nurses were trained, they were sent to hospitals all over Britain, where they introduced the ideas they had learned, and established nursing training on the Nightingale model. Nightingale's theories, published in 'Notes on Nursing' (1860), were hugely influential and her concerns for sanitation, military health and hospital planning established practices which are still in existence today.

 wakes ya up eh, when you realize JUST HOW MUCH water we use daily, and how we take it for granted.

heck, here in the city, 2 adults, 2 chilluns.......i am ASTOUNDED by how much water (and TP) gets used DAILY.......

I've got 125 gallons of uncut sugar shine in the tank. ;)
I'm lucky to live where I do. I've got a good sized spring fed river coming from the national park.
I've got one year round spring that puts out a gushing 4 inches of water.300 gpm or so.
I have several 1 to 2 inch year round springs and maybe 8 or 10, 1/2 inch to 1 inch seasonal.
My tank is 10,000 gallons,I can drain it, clean the sand out of the bottom and refill it, in a bit over an hour. The additional water feeds back to my river. I really should grow rice or build another pond up there.

Bushman, "dropping the kids off at the pool" is a term for dropping a duece, making number 2, or be being Grand Marshall of the poop parade. Once they are in the pool ...............:D

Another cool trick for getting clean water is to turn off your water main, open an upper level faucet, and then go to your base and open the tap. The water pressure will drain the clean water in the pipes above.

We had a plumbing problem a couple years ago that left us w/o water for a week. We did ok with the cases of bottled water, and jugs we stored in the basement.

It was not fun, esp w/ 3 lil ones.

I'll be checking your progression out from may jacuzzi in my suite in Vegas.
Have fun!:p

:D

Due to practicallity issues I won't be participating but will list measures I've used before and am willing to use again. I have a year round creek ( 12 ft wide up to 4 ft deep) with an access that I can back a pull trailer into. I also have several clean 55 gallon drums ( plastic) that I can fill in the creek. I can bring home 300 or so gallons in one trip and back it into the garage. Boil it and use it for drinking or bathing and I can flush with it.

Youre in Vegas dude???

Don't whack the baby at the table..........

I leave today, I'll be back next Saturday evening. The wife and daughter didn't come, so I'll have to whack something else at the table..
