Emergency knife question

I need a knife to be kept in my pack, only for emergencies. I already have an RSK5 that is inside my pocket survival kit. I also have a few EDC blades I plan to carry while backpacking in my pocket/on my belt for light duty stuff.

I'm looking for a knife that will work in a survival situation.

I purchased a griptilian combo drop point black coated 154cm folder. However after reading more, it looks like if I HAD to baton wood with it (I already carry a wire saw) that it might not hold up to the task.

Do I need a fallkniven F1? Keep in mind, Im a hiker/backpacker. I don't like weight or bulk, and although the Fallkniven is sexy, if the Griptilian will do the job, I'd rather use it since its brand new and I already own it. Thanks!

I wouldn't plan to baton with a folder. Do you need an F1? - nope. If you are looking for an inexpensive option, go with a Mora. I have bought from Ragweed Forge and Bensbackwoods. You could also pick up an Ontario Pilots Survival Knife, or a Benchmade Rant.

Anythng that you can cut with a wire saw, you can break with a gloved hand, or your boot. And why baton wood at all? Small kindling, broken from a tree above ground level will start easily enough with a small piece of candle.

Road flares, available from Wal-Mart in three packs will start a fire in the wettest wood you're likely to find.

Take your Griptilian out and practice some "survival" stuff. If you can use it to start a fire, build a shelter,etc...you won't have to buy a new knife.

Now for batoning. I really have never needed to do it for a fire. But I do it sometimes for fun.

hah all good advice!
Regarding the wire saw: Doug Ritter seems to think they are pretty great, especially the chain saw-like ones...

Interesting you mentioned the road flare thing, I keep a few in my trunk at all times, and I was just thinking the same thing.

The only problem with a road flare is that they are big, and dont extinguish easily. Total firehazard.

Try not to baton with a folder. It tends to break them >_>. If you think you're going to need a blade for that kind of hard survival use, look into getting a fixed.

Yes, Im hoping to never need to baton. But thats why I was considering the fallkniven.

The Moras are so light and easy to sharpen, not to mention cheap, that it would make my short list.

maybe a gerber prodigy, im loving my new addition to my knives, nice design and great blade!!!!!

For what you say you want it for, I would go with a fixed blade. You can definitely go cheaper, but I would take an RC4- just fits your price range and nice and heavy duty without being too awfully heavy. For a nice lightweight FB check out ROSarms on this forum, might be just what you're looking for.
