Emergency Paracord Question

OK, a question for the paracord weavers: what is the most efficient (space wise) knot for carrying about a dozen feet of paracord? That is, I want to carry an emergency length tied into as small a space as possible. A bracelet doesn’t work for me. I would probably carry it clipped to something on my belt or maybe on to a multi tool. Link to photo or better still, a video most appreciated.

Thanks!!

My favorite way is to wrap about 5-6 feet in a skein around my fingers, and tuck it in my back left hand pocket. I usually carry two of these. Then I don't worry about untying it to use it, and I can have it out in a flash.

I know another guy that folds a length in half, loops it around his beltloop, and drops the length of it down his pant leg. You can just grab the top of the loop and pull it out, and the cord is in your hand.

I know I didn't really answer your question, but in my humble opinion, I think these are both better options for carrying cord. Then again I use my cord somewhat frequently in my daily life, or sometimes I pull it out to practice knots when I have a few minutes to kill, so it's not an emergency stash. On the other hand, what constitutes an emergency? I'm not afraid to whip out my cord when someone needs an emergency dog leash, or to play cat's cradle when a kid is throwing a fit. I would be much less inclined if it were all knotted up in a bracelet or the like.

I usually carry 50'-100' in a zip lock bag in my pack. I gave up all the braided crap.

In my kit I used the method Doc showed.

I also EDC the way Siguy described using a 6 foot length of 550 cord looped through my belt or belt loop and run down a pant leg. Wearing shorts? Double it up to make it half as short.

I have about two foot with a couple of caribeaners and a SAK attached. I clip it to a belt loop and let it hang in a front pocket. Id also like to have about ten foot and still keep it short.

I do the same thing. I do a figure 8 loop and tie it off pretty much like this video (not my vid). I usually keep a couple of 30" bundles in my pocket & bundles of longer lengths when I hike/camp.

The thing about this method is that the whole bundle comes apart quickly without binding or tangling. If you want to take say half and have the rest held together, there are other methods that probably work better. That's why I do several of different lengths.

This type of bundle works great for attached tie lines for tarps/tents/etc. It stores well and is very easy to deploy. Keep it tied to the tarp, and you can pull the bundle straight to the stake and it unravels with no problems.

A Monkey fist.It takes 3 arm lengths of cord to wrap a 7/8 in ball.

I usually carry 50'-100' in a para-donut in my pack. I gave up all the shoving it in a zip lock bag crap.

+1 for monkey's fist. If you're looking for emergency cord, and want to keep it as small as possible, monkeys fist will hold quite a bit. Double cobra weave will work too, even if not worn as a bracelet.

DOC, you's a bad man. Thanks, I like that method there, very much.

Thanks Moose, I think  :D

If you like that, you might also like this or this. On the second one, scroll down to 13 and 15.

There are many ways to corral a length of 550. For me, it needs to be easy to access.

BTW, I don't think you were around here when the second thread was posted. I named it the 'Poser' braid in reference to somebody on the forum that said that anybody that used carabiners, and didn't actually rock climb was a poser, so in his honor (?), I named it the Poser braid. :D

i got quite a bit in a double cobra stitch hanging on my keychain (20-25' maybe?), But for 6ft fast I have some just wrapped around my belt (1 3/4" rigger type belt) takes up less room than you'd think.
