I am trying to finish up my Urban Survival Kit and I am currently working on a (hopefully) Comprehensive Emergency Phone # List. Asside from my own personal emergency #'s (Family, Friends, etc...) What else should be included?

-Poison Control
-National Response Center (for Disasters/Terror Attacks)
-Police (911 in my area)

What else? ALL SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!!!!!

Thanks,

-John

Relatives... Friends within 200-400 miles... Safe house stops of sorts?

Car mechanic (or auto parts store's for do it yourselfers...)
Just because if ya have to leave the area! No better way to skip town!

You might want to include a couple of pre-paid phone cards. They are lighter to carry than a pocket full of change. Cell phones are nice but may be down. It would be easier to find a working land line than using a cell phone.

Global Star and Iridium are about it for satelite phones. Iridium will work everywhere but it is quite expensive. Global Star will over North America, Europe, parts of Asia I think. It's OK in the Caribbean, but not very good out in the Oceans as their satelites are limited and only orbit land masses. Probably $400 for equipment and I think monthly service can start at $25 and it costs $0.99/minute. I do business with someone who is a Global Star dealer.

Nextel is pretty reliable with power outages as most of their towers have backup power supply and the radio is independent of the public switch. About a year ago, a fire at a power plant in Jax, FL knocked about power in three counties for a night. Nothing worked, no cellular, not even the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office analog system for several hours. The only thing working was Direct Connect.

I keep a laminated business card sized piece of paper in my wallet with my emergency numbers, blood type and "No known allergies". I keep it in a credit card slot where the Emergency Info heading can be easily seen.

That's a good idea. I think I'll pick one up the next time I'm at Wal Mart.

Frank,

Now THAT'S a good idea!!!

I have a whithered post-it note with emergency contact #'s on it (weak, I know), but I'll be adopting your method very soon!

Thanks,

-John
