what do you carry in an emergency kit for shelter? I figure a tent is probably too big and heavy for most people to include in a BOB. Am I wrong? Do you plan on just erecting a lean-to or other type of improvised shelter?

In my BOB pack I carry a couple of Mil issue ponchos and several 55 gal industrial grade trash liner bags, a sharp knife, lots of 550 cordage, a couple sources of fire, a sleep pad, poncho liner and a wool blanket. Plus, I carry a hiking staff.

In our bug out vehicle (BOV) we have a large tarp and a tent along with everything else we'd need to get a base camp set up.

Shelter in BOB:
10' x 10' nylon "trail tarp" (multiple tie tapes allow variety of rigs)
8' x 8' "survival [reflective] tarp"
100 ft. 550 cord
8 aluminum gutter spikes

Early Winters Pocket Hotel (out of production for about 20 yrs.), kind of a glorified bivy-bag. Only weighs 2 lbs & packs small. I also usually carry a tarp for overhead shelter for cooking etc.
