HI Knife Knuts,
S30V is a steel designed for knives and it cuts like crazy. Why not use an improved product? Reeve, Spyderco, for example, know that evolution is a good thing. From a buisness end this would have been a wise move also to use S30V. Give the people what they want. I own an HD with 154-cm but I'd prefer S30V but in the grand scheme of life It is no big deal. Cut happy.

s30v was indeed designed as a knife steel, however that does not necessarily mean it is improved or "better".

makers, custom and production, have their preferences regarding steel. many use ats34, 440c, d2, and like ernie, 154cm.

morimotom,
At a cutting compitition a tool-steel knife took first place but a CPM steel knife was a very close second. I love tool-steel but the CPM's are right there. Did you see Hartsfield's folder?

there are many factors that contribute to a knife's cutting ability. edge profile/angle being the most significant.

i have seen hartsfield's folders in the past, not sure which you are referring to.

Emerson has their hands full as it is. They don't need another steel right now to sell all they make.

i've seen a post by ernie on the other forum and he said he's plenty happy with 154 and has no plans to offer anything in any other steel anytime soon.

i think another big factor to keeping s30v is cost. I read somewhere that s30v is a fair amount more expensive then 154cm. and if the cost goes up for materials then the cost goes up for consumer. right now i dont think s30v is that much of an improvement that it would call for much if any cost increase.

I've found that I prefer a steel that holds an edge for a decent amount of time, but is also easy to resharpen in the field without anything much more than a pocket stone. While I've cut some materials that dulled other knives in lesser (I use the term loosely) steels in one cut and have seen S30V hold it's edge longer, it is a major pain in the neck to resharpen with a simple pocket stone or diamond. I prefer AUS-8, H-1, ATS-55 and VG-10 or 1095 over D2 or S30V.

well, there are 20 or so S30V Commanders out there. If you look hard enough, you can find one at the $350ish mark. They had special ceramic coated blades, S30V steel and blue ano-ed liners.

I don't have any to sell (sorry) but if you need one, drop me a line and I'll point you to the right direction.
