As some of you may know, my favorite knife maker after HI is Emerson Knives. They're tough as nails, but are known for fit and finish that is more geared towards function than form. I love the way they make their knives and know that everything about these knives was done for a reason. I could go into all of it but I won't, you can go look on the Emerson manufacturer forum if you want all that. Bottom line, great knives and a great company too.

I always carry one of my Emersons along with my Micro Bowie, but once I picked that up and had it checkered by Bawanna, it was clear the folders could not keep up in the looks department. I saw people on the Emerson forum post glowing reviews on a guy named Josh from Razor Edge Knives, and was intrigued. I learned that he does his own regrinds, sharpening, etching, and Cerakoting, and on top of that, a great customer service record.

A few minutes later, I was emailing him with all the questions and ideas I could think of. I had some ideas that were pretty out-there, but amazingly, he stuck with me and was extremely accommodating. In the end, I had him try something he had never done before, and it came out great.

It's been about a month since I've gotten these back, and they are still impressing me with every look and cut. They're both as hair-popping sharp as when I first received them.

Here's what I had done

The CQC-15:
- Edge reprofiled (covex chisel on the recurve, flat chisel on the tip)
-Blade finished in a bi-tone, with the grinds etched, and whole blade stonewashed. He had previously only done bi-tone with hand sanded flats.
-Liners, clip, thumb disc, and all other hardware Cerakoted in a custom OD green, based on McMillan Green.

The CQC-7AW:
-Blade reground to a razor sharp zero grind with micro-bevel
-Blade finished in an acid etch and stonewash
-Liners, clip, and hardware Cerakoted black

The results speak for themselves, so without further adieu, before and after pictures!

Before:

The CQC-7 tip

The CQC-15 tip

And after I got them back from Josh

The tips of both, 15 on the left, 7 on the right

And finally, my current EDC setup :)

All of this work was somehow done in less than two weeks from tue time the knives left my hands. And if you didn't notice from the pics, he even replaced a missing handle screw without being asked! I can't say enough good things about this experience with Josh and Razor Edge Knives, I will definitely be sending him more blades in the future :)

Doesn't the CQC-7 normally have a sharp transition instead of a gentle curve up to the tip?

Newt Livesay at for me, over twenty years. Can't say I'm not loyal. HI and Auntie now.

Scara, yes, but the "CQC-7" is usually referring to the technically-named CQC-7B, which has the chisel ground tanto blade. The CQC-7A on the other hand, has a drop-point blade. They do the A/B blades on a few other models, and B is always tanto. I just like the drop-point better for EDC due to ease of sharpening and less "weapon-like" look, more sheeple friendly IMO. The black liners and etched blade were also to subdue the look.

Bigbore, does Newt make folders? I didn't think he did. I'm quite loyal to both companies, but the difference is that I don't buy Emersons for looks, unlike HI. I couldn't see myself collecting Emersons the way I/we collect Nepali steel. Not to mention that the price of one of those folders after the custom work isn't much different than that of the Tibetan Short Sword I just scored :b

Until HI makes a folder, or Ndog takes his into production, I will have an Emerson in my pocket, and HI on my hip :)

Yes, he makes folders but, not on a regular basis. He is the man though. He took the time and effort to make a tribute piece after my son passed. Quite beautiful, from his heart.

That is quite a personal connection, and definitely special. I would love to see a picture if you have one!

I will SG. It's made from a one of a kind blank he made in the year of my son's birth he parted with only because of his kindness. A large man with even a bigger heart.

That makes sense. I have a CQC-7K, the Kershaw made version with a tanto blade and couldn't figure out how yours was so different.
