Hello,

Are these any better than the new ones or the same quality ?

I was going through some of my stuff the other day and found one NIB I did not even remember I had it..........:o

It says #970 designer series.

Thanks for any help.

Great thing to find!

I think they were very nice knives, but the wave feature tips the scales for me. I had a little trouble with the thumbdisk on the benchmades. Would not turn my nose at one by any means.

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry I don't have a pic.

Yes ! I remember buying it years ago but forgot. :o

Emerson knives are one of the best feeling knives in the hand I think.

I am sorry I have never met this man who makes these fine blades.

Some people like the BM 7s, some folks like the EKI 7s although there in not a great
deal between them really. The BM 7 also has a little bit of collector value to it.

I like the EKI 7s my self, but I am not a huge BM fan generally.

the differences are slight, but i have found them to be noticeable.

1. clip on the bm is set for only tip down carry.
2. grinds are a bit different.
3. scales and blade on the 970 are slightly wider.
4. iirc, the bm was available with a bead blasted blade, rather than the eki "satin" finish, which was actually a grey coating. i prefer uncoated blades if given a choice.

ive owned both, overall i prefer the eki's mainly because they are easier to dissasemble and i prefer tip up carry (now).

otherwise i have found both to be of equally good quality. the bm's have long been discontinued, so there is a collector value often attached. a nib 970 could bring up to $200 depending on finish and pe/se configuration. the black pe seem to be the least common.

I prefer the older 970 Benchmade/EKI collaboration knives. I generally find the fit and finish to be better and the value stays high, and as the poster above says, the black PE coated models are the hardest to find. If the knife comes with the original box I'd stow it and pickup a new Emerson CQC7 as a user, both knives are very close in design...OR seek out a user 970, which is what I did. I'm just glad EKI keeps the CQC7 in the lineup, it's such a classic!

I am guessing his response would be something similar to, "Not a cat in hell's chance!" :p

I personally carry my Benchmade/Emerson as an edc. It has been with me for around 15 years. Never failed me. I recently sent it back to Benchmade for sharpening, cleaning, and replacement of a screw that fell out. It works perfectly. I prefer the Benchmade to the Emerson due to nostalgia and quality. Bechmade made this 7 better than ernie makes his current 7. Just my opinion, but the fit and finish is better in my opinion. The scales are thicker and the liners are actually titanium and not titanium on one side and steel on another. Still, the Emerson design rules, no matter who makes it.

Here are some pics with a CQC6. I traded the 6 for a Super 6 awhile back.

Two outstanding knives.
Thanks FED.

Thanks buddy. Just a note. The Benchmade I showed was the one that was sent to the "Spa" (Benchmade) for repair. The rust stains were lightlu bead blasted off and the missing screw was replaced as well as the sharpening and oiling. They even replaced the bushings. Too bad Emerson and Benchmade had a falling out back in the 90's. Many of Ernies early customs had "Benchmade" pocket clips.

Although I have a lot of love for Emersons, Benchmade still makes outstanding knives. Just an honest opinion here.
