I have an Emerson coming in a trade. I have never as much as laid eyes on an Emerson chisel grind knife. Do these, also have a smaller bevel too? Can this be done on a Sharpmaker? I am just trying to get an idea of what it looks like. Thanks for the help.

Unless its one of his zero ground customs, there will be a chisel grind bevel. Yes, you can use a sharpmaker to sharpen the edge.

Thanks, YG. This is not a zero, as it is a production knife. I guess a light stroke on the back, or a loaded strop, would take care of opposite side? Thanks again.

Remember that on the back you want to get as close as you can to a zero edge.

If the Emerson is a V-Grind with a chisel edge, then the angles will probably be 24-25 degrees on the primary edge and 15 degrees on the other edge.

I guess I'll have to see what it looks like when it gets here. I am sure I will be able to figure out something for it, that get's it to razor status. I'll keep you guys posted on the grind. Thanks a lot for all the input.

I haven't seen an Emerson that didn't have a chisel grind. All of the ones I have seen have something of a 30° edge with it being as close to a 100/0 grind as a hollow or flat ground chisel edge knife can be. I think they do some with a traditional v grind, but it is more likely that an Emerson with a v grind had it added aftermarket.

I know my terminology is off.

In my experience with my emersons, it was about 1 stroke on the chisel side for every 10 or so strokes on the presentation bevel. Not hard to do once you get some experience with it, just a little bit of a learning curve. Honestly I while I appreciate an even double bevel, emerson's grinds work perfectly for me and I've never had any issues

- Emerson production knives come in two basic flavors. A chisel grind (i.e. CQC-7) and v-grind (i.e. CQC-7V, CQC-10, etc.). All of them have a chisel edge.

My two current emersons have closer to a 15 degree microbevel on the backside or the burr removing side. I haven t measured it.....but they are not zero on my 2 made in 2013. These are factory edges still with the original factory edge....both bought from two different authorized dealers that are loved on this site.

I've got two Emersons with v-grinds. I've had no trouble maintaining them with my sharpmaker; I just put one stone in the 40° side, and one in the 30°, and sharpen as usual (making sure to match up the more acute side of the knife with the 30, and the obtuse with the 40.)

Eventually, I'm sure the edge will thicken up and need to be reprofiled, but this has worked pretty well for the better part of 2 years on my CQC-10.
