Emerson Collector's Association

I became a member shortly after it started. Never bought anything though. Hell, don't even remember my member number.

The membership is worth it if you either don't want or can't afford to buy a custom Emerson knife. ECA knives are just as good as the customs at a fraction of the costs. $400 versus $900 - $1,200.

Yea the Knife of the Year seems like a good deal for a semi-custom(is that right?). I was only wondering because I could press the Order Now button and choose serial numbers.

i have both customs and ECA's and while the ECA's are pretty cool they are not equal to a custom.

why?

easy because they arent a custom knife.

they have hand ground blades but production handles and dont have the bolsters and micarta that most customs do, they do seem to have better lock up even with the thin liners than a lotta the productions though.

and yes you do have to belong to ECA to but them unless ya buy them from someone else.

they seem to be worth the money though if ya dont like 'em they really hold there value well FWIW as long as ya keep 'em in good shape.

Thanks for clarifying. I did not intend to say they were equal, but for people who either cannot afford or otherwise do not want a custom, an ECA knife is just as good! It is limited production, most were hand ground by Ernie, until recently, and until this last one, and the Azek Marud, they were "True Satin Finish". I would argue that the first two ECA knives are really customs. Since the ECA Persion and HMMV-K were handground and I believe (correct me if I am wrong) assembled by Ernie. If you have seen and held the HMMV-K, it is arguably the largest (blade thickness and liner thickness) folder that has ever come out of EKI.

Bottom line, an ECA is a GOOD deal for the money. Ernie's EDC is a 19-Eleven, so it must not be bad, since he can choose from any custom he makes. Take it from a guy who owns a few Emerson customs, they are GREAT!!

i am not 100% sure ernie grinds all of the ECA blades i have had conflicting reports on that, though he certainly does grind some of 'em, same deal with assembly, i have heard he does all of 'em and also that he does some of them, i am not sure who to belive and havent ever seen a post by ernie clarifying WTF, and they are all built with production handles if there is a production equivalent anyway.

i was wondering about the grind and assembly when i got my ECA P-tac and i got 2 different stories and like i said was never sure who to believe, i shoulda em'd ernie but never did, i figured he would post about it sooner/later on USN but never did IIRC.

but yeah they are a good deal,

also ernie carries a lotta different knives, i have heard his fav is a ti custom '12 FWIW.

And if you ever get sick of the ECA P-tac you know where to send it ;)

He recently posted on the other forum that he has been exclusively carrying a 19-Eleven lately. He even posted a pic of it used. But yeah, he rotates a lot from what I have seen. I read somewhere that the first two ECA's were done exclusively by him. As far as the grinding, for sure the first two, since those are the only ones he ever zero ground.
