Hi,

I am thinking of purchasing an Emerson Commander. I am an outdoor enthusiast and folding knife lover and am planing to carry this knife regularly.

Has anybody carried one of these knives in their pocket for any period of time? Would anybody suggest the MINI version?

Thankful for any thoughts or ideas you have.

Carring mine for a year now.
The wave option and the shape of the blade is what did it for me.

I'm very happy with the overall quality (of course) en i'm also happy
by taking the mini and not the big size. It fits much easier in the pocket,
wich is important when you sit a lot.

It is the best folder i have carried up till now.
The only criticism i have is that it does not sharpen easily
on a diamond plate.
It has to be done with the proper tools.

ciao, Pieter

I carry one on ocassion but just find it is pretty big to edc every single day. That and it isn't really sheeple friendly. It also takes a bit of practice to get the chisel edge grind sharpened properly. I use a Lansky set at 25 deg and that seems to work fine. At least on the several EKI's I have owned. I have the technique down now and have done it enough to where I can get them absolutely scary sharp. Not as sharp as my CS Recon but close. For some reason that Recon folder is out of the ordinary when it comes to getting sharp and staying that way.

If I was you I would look at the EKI mini Comm. Still a big knife but a more manageable size. Lighter in the pocket but just as robust with the same thickness blade and liner. I am a big fan of it. My mini has a better tip also. Not as thick so it penetrated better. I can stick it in my cutting board without undue effort. The Comm. on the other hand takes considerably more effort to stick it in the board. I can do it but just more effort. I have also noticed that the QC from EKI has been notched up a bit over the past few years. Before my complaint was the fit and finish at times left a bit to be desired. Now they are pretty much spot on for f&f. Hope all this helps. The Comm. is a good tactical knife while the mini is a great edc. keepem sharp

My Commander is one of my favorite folders and I carried it daily for a couple years. I kind of wish I had bought the mini though, as the full size is kind of sketchy to use in situations around people or customers (I work in corporate apartment maintenance and use my knife to open boxes/fix things etc in front of clients, and I've recieved some scared looks from non-knife folks). The full size is ideal for any chore and I've camped and hiked with it as my solo blade, using it for eating and cooking, shaving fire fuzz sticks, picking splinters, you name it. As someone mentioned above the spyderco ceramic rod sharpener works really well on the curved blade. You might use an oval diamond hone also. A flat stone is really a pain to sharpen recurvend blades (in my experience). A fine knife that will probably last you a lifetime. If you like the size and shape of the commander you might also look at the Benchmade Skirmish, by Neil Blackwood, size and shape are kind of similar and I feel that Benchmade's overall quality competes evenly with that of Emerson's knives.

I just bought a CQC7 Super Tact. tanto folder.I read some reviews and all glouted over these knives. Some of THEE BEST folders around period.Mine will be heavily used and I will let you know.Buy the way, they have a smaller version of this knife as well.

Thought I would go back and find this post. Well as for the Commander I have decided that this will be my favorite edc or most often carried. The reasons being are several. But the one reason that stands out for me is the ergo's of the knife. I have severe carpal tunnel bi laterally and this knife with the curve to the grip just allows me to use the tool without undue fatigue.

There are a few more reasons such as the sharpenability of the 154cm seems to be a bit better than other brand knives using 154cm I have found. The EKI warranty seems to me to be the best in the business with turn around times being very judicious. And Emerson just seems to be a fine all around human being. Now I will on ocassion carry other brands, especially at work where my Tempest/Trident usually accompany me. But for all around carry the Commander is it. keepem sharp

I have a few different commanders and unfortunately they are not what they were years ago. The liner lock is way to thin now and the screw comes loose allowing blade play, much to often.

If your heart's really set on an Emerson, I'd recomment the "banana knife" (CQC 8) for your outdoor needs. The "swayback" spine design is a more practical cutter for this setting. If you're open to other brands, only one thing I could recommend that's reliable, strong and multi-tasking - Spyderco Manix!

I've handled the commander and mini commander and they were quite nice...very good action, although I wish there was a little more ball detent. Felt pretty good in the hand. Love the blade shape.

Also consider the Skirmish/Mini skirmish from Benchmade, which has a sort of similar look and feel (very different knife though)

and for comparison, a Commander

Love my mini-Commander. It was my first "waved" knife so beware if you have never used a "waved" blade. I cut the bejesus out of my finger when the blade partially deployed, when I partially pulled the knife out of my pocket. I know stupid me.

High quality, great blade shape!
