Emerson Commander- hazard to your health?

I've been having a lot of fun using the wave feature on my new Commander. I couldn't help wondering it this feature posed any danger to the user. I mean, if I hold on to the wrong part of the knife when pulling it out I can feel the blade sweep across my finger, and it can't be good having the blade open so fast and so close to your body. So has anyone ever injured themselves using the wave, or am I just being paranoid?

Since it's tip up, your first concern is in reaching for it. It opens very easily, so you could do a real good finger or thumb slice if it was just a little bit open when you reached in to take it out. I use extra care and always double check to make sure it is closed, and stays closed, when I put it in my pocket.

Also, Don Rearic pointed out in another thread that if it gets part way open in your back pocket, you could take a pretty good chunk out of your butt if you're not careful. It is a great slicer!

I've had mine brush my coat when doing the wave, and wondered about damage (so far no wave damage). It would be good to hear some advice from those who have used it as a regular carry for a period of months or years. There's no substitute for experience.

My belief after a few weeks of regular carry is that it is safe, but only if you are always careful in handling it.

I have had no injuries with mine...yet

I know from experience, people that are not familiar with the knife or for that matter, knives in general, should not play with the wave opening in a crowded room! My co-workers were having a blast trying to get it to "POP" out of their pockets in our rather crowed lunch room. I had to take it away from them before someone lost a nose or something worse!!

I carry my commander in my right front pocket at a slight rearward angle, this way it doesn't jab me with the handle when I sit down and it allows for a fast and smooth draw. I've found that if it is positioned completely vertical that it rapidly rips up my pocket with it's wave. I have come to expect that the knife will open whenever I remove it from my pocket (even when I'm putting it away for the night) therefore I am always careful to prevent an accidental cut. As far as getting cut on the draw, practice your technic alot. The handle on my Commander rides very high (I wish the pocket clip was mounted higher so it would ride lower in the pocket, as it very difficult to conceal). Because of the high ride it is almost like drawing a pistol grip and after practicing and starting out slow and building upto a fast draw I don't fear an accidental cut. My two cents...

I had a minor incident with my Commander once, and I learned my lesson. I was pulling it out of my pocket at the end of a long day. The knife partially opened without me noticing. As I reached back down to pull it out of my pocket, I cut my index finger by wedging it between the handle and blade. It was too nothing serious luckily. After that I have not had any problems.

It is my experience that as long as you keep it against the pocket seam,it is safe. That way there is no room for partial opening I have never had a problem with premature...um...opening.:-)

I second David's comment on keeping the blade along the pocket seam. I've carried a Commander mostly every day for well over a year now with no problems. I do check the blade and mechanism frequently and occassionally tighen the pivot screw. I do use the wave on occassion to deploy the blade. My normal carry position is left front pocket.
