Emerson Commander--How is it supposed to Work?

I dropped into my local Army Surplus store yesterday, which is as close to a knife shop as I've found so far in a reasonable distance, and handled an Emerson Commander. Now I've seen an MPEG of this thing opening as its pulled from a pocket and its too fast to see exactly what is going on. How exactly is that "wave" function supposed to work?

The "wave" snags on/catches the "lip" of the pocket as the folder is pulled or slid out, thus deploying the moment it completely exits the pocket. Some other designs also can be similarly deployed though they have no "wave"(have successfully deployed a MT SOCOM Elite this way)

that funky s&w magnesium-handled "i wish i was madd maxx" looks like such an opening may be possible with it.

I've taught hundreds of people to "Do the Wave".

Basically, your whole life you've picked your knife up out of your pocket. With any knife that has a wave, your actually sliding it out of your pocket. As "bl8de" mentioned, "The Wave" makes contact with the edge of your pocket and pivots the blade open.

Absolutely the fastest deployment meathod for a knife. It's actually opening as you deploy it.

EKI offers several models now with the "Wave".

. . . . with more waved models to come.

Be careful pulling the knife from your pocket while sitting down that you don't cut yourself, or your pocket. I don't know why, but I had the worst luck with them. The first one I ordered from a local dealer and the liner lock would barely engage the tang. Even after adjusting the pivot screw, the lock would not engage properly. I returned it and received another as an exchange. This one locked up okay, but after one week of playing around with the "wave" feature, the liner lock bar worked it's way across the tang almost making contact with the washer on the other side. I could not believe that a titanium liner lock would wear out that fast. I adjusted it by tightening the pivot screw but the lock bar still engaged more than halfway across the blade tang and I had to deal with stiff action. A buddy of mine offered to buy it from me and see if he could tinker with it , so rather than sending it Emerson Knives, I sold it. My third one, I bought at a retailer after examining several samples at the store and it was acceptable. This one I ended up trading for a Microtech.
