Hello All-

I just won a Commander on the other forums, and I'm in need of some advice as to how to sharpen it. I've read that it's a chisel grind. I'm only familiar with convex sharpening on a mousepad. Can you assist me?

Thanks! Happy New Year!

The primary grind is V, and only the edge is chisel. I have seen this same thing an a hundred different knives, yet everybody makes a big deal about it on an Emersons...go figure!

See the Emerson web site for info on sharpening techniques.

By a Lansky sharpener with the stones in it and not the diamonds. I have both and just don't care for the diamond hones. Anyways set the edge guide so that when you make a pass with the hone it perfectly matches the edge. May take a bit of work but I know for a fact you can get it matched up perfectly. keepem sharp

i prefer not to use any "systems" on EKI CG's, i would do it like on the EKI website myself.

These lines should come with every v-grind Emerson. It is not a big deal to sharpen, and if you want to use your convex technique on it, that will work too, once you get the edge reprofiled for it.

By the way, congratulations! You go a great knife there. :)

Not a problem. My last Commander was so tight, I needed a two hand grip to close it, till I broke it in. It's thin but it's metal. I think we get too used to massive rather than to effective. :)

I use a smith's diamond rod sharpener, and it works out just fine. Just place the flat side against the original blade angle and stroke away from yourself keeping it at a 90 degree angle to the blade. Do that 2-3 times and then do it once on the back side. Comes out sharp everytime.

I've used a regular diamond plate sharpener, and it has been tricky to get the angles right because of the chisel grind. But, once you get THAT right it will sharpen up, and is currently on of my sharpest knives. That 154cm is nice stuff.
