Anyone know if there is a major difference in the quality between the Emerson Commander Knives made nowadays versus the one's made in the late 90's?? Are they that much different?

Only my opinion, but the Mini Commander I bought with a 2006 production date is a little bit nicer in terms of fit & finish than my early 2000 Emerson Blackbird. The hardware is finished better and the liner appears to be thicker too. Overall it just seams like a better product.

some of the early commanders had thick liners IIRC (pre '98??) and are worth a premium but other than that they are about equal imho.

imho EKI's made after about '02 or so seem to have better F&F and less liner lock issues than earlier ones.

FWIW of all the common EKI's the commander is my least favorite, i very much prefer the '12, '13 &'8.

I have two EKI Commanders now. An 04 and an 05. The 04 has a very thick liner lock on it with a very thin offside liner. The 05 has a thinner liner lock with a slightly thicker offside liner. Both knives are very well used. No issues between either with lock up. I mean none. If you were using either one you wouldn't be able to tell which liner was which as for integrity.

My favorite EKI though is the 11, followed by the Commander and then the SOFCK. I have had a couple of 13's and may score another off ebay cause the price is right. I also carry other knives in rotation most notable are MOD's and a 710. I sometimes carry a p.e. El Hombre too by CS but that one is so scarce I don't like to use it much but out of all the knives I own that is probably the best cutter of the bunch. So there you have another man's opinion. keepem sharp

Thanks for the info---I was wondering what the big deal was as far as '98 Commanders going for $350 bucks on EBay---I have an '05 and I have had no issues whatsoever with it!!
