Hey, maybe you experienced knife guys can help me out, i don't know anything about knives. I'm planning on purchasing the Emerson Commander BT-S soon; and after hearing about the lack of quality control, exactly how do i know i have a "good" knife? What things should i check/look for at the store? Thanks for your help...

By the way, how do you guys think Emerson Mach-1 compares to the Comander?

The things to look out for are - a nice tight lock-up on the near side, you don't want the liner engaging too far across right out of the box. The blade should be centered in the handle or close to it.Other than these 2 points there is not much to worry about when purchasing an Emerson. If you're ordering over the Internet, get the dealer to check the knife for you before sending it, most of them will do this for you.

The Commander at first glance, looks like a very specialised knife but there is nothing that recurve and belly won't cut, it is extremely efficient. The lack of a real point may not appeal to some but it is pointy enough for most tasks. The Mach 1 is a good knife, more of a compromise, and doesn't have the Wave which is ingenious. Either way you can't go wrong, but the Commander has something about it that makes it very hard to leave at home.
