Hello there,This is the first time I asked a question on this site, and I hope you can give me some information.I am intending to buy an Emerson Knife, the Comrade cqc-12,because I think it looks great, and also very strong, but now I have this question, could you use the back of that knife as a glass/windowbreaker in an emergencysituation(vehicle in the water, etc)?Would it work for such things,or would it be better to look for another knife? Thanks in advance for your help.Greetings, lieven from Holland.

The cqc-12 really doesn't have any sharp points on it when it's closed. The blade pretty much disappears in the handle so there are no protrusions sticking out that could be used effectively as a window breaker. The tip of the blade could be used -depending on safety, or potentially the butt of the handle with a hard enough blow. Other than that, it's one of my all time favorite knives and a real work horse. -I'll also point out that I had a Microtech socon elite that I had the glass breaker fall apart on. So it may be worth considering a second tool for windows if that's an option. Mod/blackhawk makes a knife with a glass breaker too, but I have no experience with them. Good luck.

Thank you for your information, and I think I will order the Emerson anyway just because I like it very much. And I wil have a good look at the Mod/Blackhawk knifes also. Thanks again.Greetings,Lieven.

i would imagine the butt of the '12 would work as a GB device, FWIW the '12 is my fav emerson of all, great knife, its been my edc since x-mas.

I agree.

I can not seem to leave this one behind!

Welcome to Bladeforums!

The best tools for emergency services -- breaking glass, cutting seatbelts -- are not knives, unless the knives are dedicated to that function, like the Spyderco Assists.

But there is a much better solution, the ResQMe: the LifeHammer ResQMe Keychain Rescue Tool
