I am sure this has been asked before but I would like to hear current thinking on this topic. My local knife dealer has told me that CQC 13 and 16, and perhaps all Emerson is overpriced. What do you think? I love the looks of these and am trying to trade into one of them. My question though is that IF they are overpriced for what you get, then what is a better value for very massive, beefy, bowie type blade design in a folder?

If you are looking for a rugged folding knife that you can beat the hell out of and keep using, you can't go wrong with an Emerson. Are there other hard-use knives out there for less? Absolutely. As Nternal said, the Recon1 is a great example. As far as overpriced, Emersons tend to hold their value pretty well on the secondary market. So if you don't like it, the option to sell it is always there, and I would be surprised if it didn't sell within a day.

They are plenty tough. I owned many Emerson's over the years and the 13 was my favorite until the 12 came along. I've never seen a post where someone out right broke an Emerson under normal use. Issues of lock problems and fit and finish arise, but flat out breaking one I've yet to see. Worth the price? I paid it and it was worth it to me and when I did finally sell them off, as mentioned they sold quickly in "used" condition for near to what I paid.

I've got the 13.
Pros: Great egros (comfortable to hold and it's impossible for your hand to slip doing a hard stab)
Excellent blade shape (i don't need to say anymore about bowies)
Awesome piercing tip (it's really really pointy)
Thick titanium liner lock
Not forgetting the wave :)

Cons: Poor fit & finish (can't even compare with a China made Tenacious)
Clip (would be better if the knife sits much lower)
Lock (looks like there isn't much space for lock wear)

Are the fit and finish pretty much inferior looking? I was concerned about this. Before investing in one I want to know first if I am going to get something looking like cheap crap. Is this something some hand polishing would cure, or more serious than that?

What about the Darrel Ralph Gunhammer? Think that comes in a bowie configuration, and you don't have to worry about F&F with HTM.
