I originally planned to purchase a CQC 14. I waited two months and continue to get the run anround with dealers telling me the knife will be arrive in just one more week. I contacted Emerson and they told me it will be 6 weeks before shipping. I'm wondering if any members can compare the CQC 14 and the Mini Sere 2000. I like the fact that the Al Mar is an ounce lighter. I believe the knife lengths are both less than 3". That, and the fact that they're both very high quality knives is the reason for my purchase. Many thanks for your assistance.

Both are nice knives. I think the mini SERE is easier to carry on and EDC basis. The mini SERE has, I believe, a bit longer blade than the 14. The mini SERE is close to 3" while the CQC-14 is more like 2.7 inches. I like the blade shape on the 14 better, however. The grinds on spine side of the SERE are too "combat" looking to me. The 14 also feels a bit sturdier to me. This is probably because the handle is bigger and the fact that it weighs a bit more.

I do have to say that the CQC-14 is my favorite Emerson. While both are good solid knives, I don't carry either. I seem to carry the small Ritter grip or the small Sebenza. Both suit me better for EDC. The Ritter and Sebenza are less "tatical" looking and both are very, very sturdy hard working knives.

Good luck on finding the one that's best for you. Both the SERE and 14 are solid. They're just different in size and looks (and I'd just as soon have the 154 CM in the 14 steel as the VG-10 in the SERE-- both are good steels IMO).

:)

Thanks so much for your input. Ha! Now you've made my decision making process that much harder.

Both are great knives, but I would go with the Emerson (Just my preference). I like the looks and feel of the Emerson better.

VG10 is superior steel, but I don't really like the look of the SERE.

I'd throw a Spyderco in there for consideration, really.

Ok.......I'm convinced. I'm going with the Emerson. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Any preferences for plain vs. serrated CQC 14 and would you buy the CQC 14 used (2006) relatively cheap or go for a new (2007)? Thanks.

My 14 is plain edge. I didn't know that a SE was available...not that it would have made any difference in my decision. I strongly prefer PE. For most everyday work tasks, I think PE is the best option. Just my opinion.

Anyway, I thought you would have bought the 14 by now ???

:)

FANTASTIC EMERSON DEALER................. If you're looking for an honest, honorable, Emerson knife dealer, you need go no further than: actionconcepts.biz. I've found many Emerson dealers to be unscrupulous and underhanded. James Marsh of "actionconcepts" is the antithesis of this. He's a great guy with a huge selection of great knives. James' prices are extremely fair and his service is without equal. James is truly a jewel amongst knife dealers. I plan to purchase more knives from him in the future.

EMERSON CQC 14 "SNUBBY"..............Wow! It's simply a great knife. I'm quite surprised. It has a feel unlike any other knife I've ever owned. I would describe the feel as a hybrid between a Spyderco Military and an Ontario RAT 1. The finish and construction of the knife are quality. I must admit I'm a little concerned the way the liner lock catches slightly more than the corner of the blade when opened, unlike these other two knives that feel as secure as a tank when opened. I assume that will change with time. All in all it's a great knife and a greater EDC. The full size handle makes it truly feel like a much larger knife. Instantly one of my favorites.

i carry the al mar mini sere. it's a beautie!! nice an compact and vg-10 which is wicked sharp. picked it over many knives at bonds house of cutlery in las vegas this spring. when you open it and hear that click and feel the strong lock-up you will surely like this knife alot.
