Hello,
I am trying to find a pic of an older B.M.-Emerson CQC-7. I have found plenty of the new models but a buddy of mine has one made back in the 90s I think.

He said it was made by B.M. under the supervision of Emerson. I am going to get to see this knife next week (NIB) but would like info. and pic to look at before hand. I may offer to buy this knife if it's priced within my range. thanks for any help.

The older BM CQC-7 looks basically like the newer models. They did make a "large" CQC-7 variation called the 975 which is basically and elongated CQC-7 w/ a 4 inch blade.

theres one nib at my knife dealer, the only problems that i see with that knife is theres no wave, the blade is not coated, and its chissle ground :barf: i ordered a super cqc7 with a coated blade but i still aint excited about the blade grind.

After Benchmade discontinued the 970, Emerson released the CQC7-B with a bead blast finish just like the older BM 970, but then switched to the hard chrome finish and black-T finish they currently sell. Note the original bead blast version next to the hard chrome finished "waved" model.

Thanks a bunch guys, great pics, thats just what I needed. So the 970 or 975 was also called CQC-7 by B.M. while in production ? Or are the older models just CQC-7 ? I also heard the older original models are hard to find and quite expensive, is this true ?

To sum all this up, I am hoping my buddy has an original early model B.M., or an earlier model of the new Emerson CQC-7. The only thing I really have to go by is the date he said he bought it, early 90s maybe.

Yes, the Benchmade 970, 975 were also referred to as the CQC-7. The reason why Emerson Knives refers to it as the CQC-7B is beacause they also has a spear point version called the CQC-7A. Emerson's equivalent to the larger BM 975 model is the Super CQC-7. You find some 970's up for sale on Ebay from time to time and occasionally, someone will put one up for sale or trade here on the Forums. I recently acquired a 1999 Emerson CQC-7B with a bead blast finish and an older Benchmade 970HK (Black-t coated with the HK logo on the blade) in pretty good condition a few months ago here on the Forums.

When you get to see the blade in person, look at both sides of the blade. On one side, you should see the Benchmade butterfly logo. On the other side, you should see the Emerson logo. On the Emerson side, you may or may not see 'CQC-7.' The blade steel marking close to the handle, standard for Benchmade, should be on the Emersons side for a right handed model; reversed if a left hand model. Those should let you know quickly if you've the original. Hope this helps.

Cosmic, thank you, thats good info. Good scores !

Hateman, it will help a lot. I hope it's an older model and he does not want an arm and leg for it.
He said he bought it when they first came out, so it should be the real thing.

Agian, thanks a bunch for pics and advice.

i wouldnt pay an arm/leg for it, 970's and 975's run around $100 or so LNIB. i got a 90+% condition 975SBT a while back for $60. at least unless its the ti blade one , IIRC those are higher, $150 or so, these are pretty rare though, have seen one a while back.

the BM's are also tip down and the EKI's are tip up.

of the 2 brands imho the EKI is better, though the BM is ok too, dont like tip down though myself.

Hey guys, an update on the knife I was describing above. I brought it home with me today, it is a beauty. My buddy seemed to be right on with the description. Here is what I have, on the front side of blade it says Benchmade U.S.A., has the butterfly above it. On the backside of blade, it says Emerson, under that it says, Spec War, model CQC-7.

It is NIB with papers, perfect condition seems to me in every way. The Box has a sticker on it that says Benchmade Knife Co., Inc., Designer Series, #970, Emerson CQC-7-Plain edge, Made in U.S.A. It has no play in any direction, blade centered perfect and smooth as silk.

My buddy said he bought it in 1993 for $90, he ask $100 for it and I said that was a great deal but I plan to give him $120 for it because he is such a nice guy. I just felt he should make a little more that $10 after having it for so long. It looks identical to the pic. Cosmic posted above (bead blast top knife) except it is straight edge and the B.M. symbol shown on the front of his blade is located on the back side of mine.

Opinions, do you think this is a fair deal ? Thanks for any input.

P.S. Clip is perfect and says Benchmade U.S.A.

If you're happy with it, and he's happy with it, it's a good deal! :)

I've got a couple of the BM 970's, one of which I had signed (engraved w/ an autograph) by Dick Marcinko. To me, it (BM 970) was the first real deal "hard-use tactical" production knife.

I've got a question for anyone who might know. Why is it that one of my BM 970s says "Emerson design" under the Emerson logo, and another says "Spec War model CQC7" under the same logo? Did the older ones say "Emerson design", and the newer ones, "Spec War model CQC7"? Thanks!

Those are great pics, one of those looks just like mine............ Thanks for posting them and thanks for the info.
