I don't come around these parts much anymore, but I did have an interesting story to relate, and thought this might be the place to tell it.
Around last December/January I treated myself to a new work knife in the form of an Emerson CQC-8. I brought it here the Prudhoe Bay, Alaska oilfields where I carried it and it simply worked well. cut what it was supposed to, no B.S.
So come about last February, I was setting up for a rig move, and transporting a good bit of support equipment out to one of the pads. On the way back, I hooked up to a broken down piece of equipment to haul back to the shop. At one point, I stopped, and got out to double check all my connections, hitch was locked, safety chains, working safety lights, not dragging hoses. etc. got into my truck and went on about my work day.
A couple hours later, I reached into my pocket for my knife and realized I had lost it. I knew exactly where I had lost it- in the road when I'd gotten out of the truck. The rig, shop, loaders, trailer loads of pipe, etc. were already heading down the road, and there was no way I was going to get past it all to look for my knife, so...I cursed under my breath, wrote my knife off and got on with the day. several hours later when I was able to get to the spot, I couldn't find the knife, which was no big surprise.
Fast forward to this week...A friend of mine was talking to me, and he started to tell me about how he found "a...uhmm....Benchmade....Horse...something...." and I interrupted and told him and told him it was an Emerson CQC-8 Horseman that he'd found out on Tract-14,gave him a dead on description, and told him it was mine. So, a few days ago, he gave it to me. and I put it away until today when I had some time to look at it. I took out my multi-tool, took it apart, and was amazed to find the darn thing was still in fine condition.
After laying out in -40 weather for God knows how long, and getting run over by a rig, a bunch of 65,000 LB loaders, tractor trailers, etc. the only things wrong with it were that the blade stop had popped out of it, and the pocket clip was mashed flat as hell. It had also gotten scratched to hell. No bent liners, broken blades, cracks, chips, broken handles, nothing. For it to lay there, and take that all those tons of equipment rolling back and forth over it with such minimal damage is simply amazing to me. I guess I'll be keeping my knife now that I have it back. It's too ugly to sell now anyways, even though it locks up tight, and the blade still rests dead center when folded. I'll probably use it as a spare, and buy myself that Super CQC-7 that I've been lusting over for awhile now.
This should provide a link of the offending rig that mushed my knife: (It's not my picture, it's one I googled, but...same rig)
