Emerson CQC vs Benchmade 910 Stryker

I own both and like both very much, but if I had to choose a blade style, it would be the Stryker. Better blade to handle ratio, smooth satin finish and ground on both sides. To me it's better than the old Benchmade CQC-7. On the otherhand, the current Emerson CQC7-B feels better in the hand and the hard chrome finish looks better than the older bead-blasted blades and you can get them in green G10 handles.

The double grind on the BM 910 makes it far more useable in a variety of different situations, IMHO.

The BM 970 is a better comparison to the Emerson CQC7 than the 910 Stryker. I have all three (left-handed versions) and would opine that the 910 is my favorite of the three. So much so that I own two of them - one for the display (black blade) and one for the road. I like it better for the double grind and the feel and balance of it. My two Strykers also operate slicker than the CQC7's, though that might be just these particular examples. Of the Emerson and Benchmade CQC7's, I like the Benchmade better because of the length. - Lee

Yes--the BM 970 and the Emerson CQC7 are essentially the identical knife. Ernie Emerson started producing the CQC7 on his own after he and BM parted ways about 5 yrs. ago.

Similar, but definitely not identical. My BM has a blade that is a touch under 4" whereas the EK is about 3.25". Also, the BM is tip-down only, whereas the EK is tip-up or tip-down. - Lee

Actually the BM 975 is the 4" blade while the 970 is 3.3", same as the EKI CQC-7B. Of the BM and EKI 7's I would go EKI. As for the Stryker or EKI 7 it is more difficult. I love the Stryker and its handle is the best IMO. It is also a more useful blade for utility with its shallower secondary point and conventional grind. I would pick the Stryker slightly ahead because of the blade and handle shape. It is also availible in M2, which is good for hard utility uses, although some have a hard time sharpening it.

I like both EKI and Benchmade. If you want a double ground Emerson go for the CQC-7A of my fav, the mini commander. I like the axis lock on the BM's and there always super smooth. One advantage of EKI however, is that you can take it apart and service it youself without voiding the warrenty. So, if you go to the beach and get salt water and sand in it, you just need a couple of screw drivers and it's good as new. I just cleaned a buddy's BM and it was not so easy.

I have an EKI CQC7 and I love it but as a utility edge it just does not work for me. For the type of general purpose cutting I do it just doesn't work as efficently as a conventional V-grind...and I'm not very good at sharpening the CQC7 chisel grind either....

I think the BM would have the edge over the EKI for me.

well, i have a BM 910CG(chisel grind), a 910S, a 970 and a 975, and a EKI CQC7, and of all, i prob prefer the CG stryker, though i must admit for edc for the majority of people, the 'V' grind 910 is prob better

the CG 910 is very sharp for a CG, much sharper than aEKI w/out some serious work on a spydies ceramic ultra fine hone -

but all of them are great knives, any will certainly do the job,

I would pick the Emerson. I don't know why the blade/handle ratio has gotten a bad rap, it is great.

Many would say that the spearpoint blade is more adept to utilitan needs, but the tanto as a defense tool, but I think they are both good for both applications.

The convenience of being able to take it apart is noteworthy; so is the ease of sharpening a chisel grind (YOU ONLY HAVE ONE SIDE TO SHARPEN, and IT IS JUST AS SHARP AS A V- Grind)

If a tanto is chosen, the WAVE option is definitely a must!!!

I love both designs. I sold my BM 910SCG and still have my BM 975 CQC7. I wish emerson would make a 4 inch CQC7B with a wave. I sold my BM 910SCG because I prefer larger blades. I keep buying new knives to add to my collection but I keep coming back to these two designs. Any one know of a good online place to buy a CQC7B with a wave?
