Emerson CQC13 or Benchmade Skirmish?

I have a CQC13 and I gotta say it is one big beautiful knife. I would choose the cqc13 :)

Combine the benefits of both knives and go with the Emerson CQC-12

It's a CQC-13 with the framelock of the Skirmish.

The Emerson CQC-8 is a winner and the CQC-15 is also a good one.

The Bradley Alias I and II are excellent. My favorites picks are the CQC-12, CQC-8, and Bradley Alias II.

Either way, do NOT buy from Savson Swords and Knives!! I've had a lot of trouble with them in the past. It isn't so much the ordering or receiving, but rather the return or replacement if there is an issue with the product. Please, search the forums and read what others have to say. As far as I know, the gentleman once did very good business here, but it has certainly dropped in quality. Notice that you cannot even find a phone number on the site.

As with everything, YMMV. Just a heads up.

Ah, well I picked those two mainly because of the stylish way they both looked, and that they are from very respected brands. Is this the one you are talking about? http://savsonswordsandknives.com/emcqblcoed2.html <- CQC-12 (Also which would be better say in a tactical sense or self-defense, the combo edge or plain?) Also, I wanted to get the Benchmade Gold Class Stryder 910TI for the looks mainly, but the only place I found it, it costs $799.99.

Well, I did a little bit of research on that also, but with all the negative reputation the dealer has, I've also seen some very positive feedbacks. I've e-mailed about the products and got prompt replies to my e-mail each time. Where else, besides Savson would be a very good place to get a wide assortment of Emerson and/or Benchmade knives that have money orders as part of a means for payment?

I've owned Emersons, but not the CQC-13. I'm not a fan of liner locks. I own both a mini-Skirmish and a large Skirmish. They are both excellent, very well built and well designed knives.

If you haven't seen the large Skirmish up close and in person, I recommend that you do that. It is a HUGE folder. It seems much larger than is apparent from its specs. I tend to carry the mini-Skirmish because it's still a lot of knife but in a smaller package.

Bottom line, my vote is the Skirmish over the Emerson. I think the ti frame lock is much more secure and has better longevity than the liner lock. Plus I prefer S30V over 154cm steel.

Have owned knives you are asking about. I like the 13 better. Just my opinion but the grip ergo's on EKI's are just terrific. The 13 is big too. Better grip ability and a better cutting blade imho. keepem sharp

I would go with a plain edge Emerson CQC-12 with the ti framelock if you decide on that model.

I have a 13 with a Tom Krein regrind and it's as good as it gets for me. I liked Skrimish too for the short time I had it, on loan from my brother for a test drive, but the overall package of the 13 suits my personal needs. Plus it's waved!

Matador-

I would go Benchmade Skirmish , Emerson is overpriced , an has crappy QC . Some are dead sexy looking beasts , just dont trust their lockup an F/F .

Chris

BS, nothing wrong with EKI's F&F, i totally disagree with that.

overpriced?? compared to what?? i suppose to some they are sexy, not to me though, my girlfriends sexy not my knife lol.

nothing wrong with QC or lockup either, the EKI liners are no better/worse than any other LL around imho.

using that logic how in the world does EKI sell so darned many crappy, overpriced, lousy finished knives?

of the skirmish and '13 i would go w/the '13, i dont like the skirmish myself very much, tip down is one reason, while the '13 is what i edc albeit a custom version.

the very best EKI imho is the '12 though.

+1

I own the CQC13, and although it looks mighty fine and is very comfortable to hold, i do not trust it as much as my Spyderco Military.

The lockup of the Emerson varies in where the liner stops on the tang, and due to the softer nylon washers the blade can wiggle a bit which doesn't help the lockup either.
Tightening the pivot pin screw doesn't help in this,

Here in the Netherlands a CQC13 will set you back 418 dollars, so i cannot comment on the price in the States.

agreed. make mine a 12.

If you plan to use this as an EDC with utility functions, Emerson's chisel grind is the wrong way for a right-hander, not a deal killer because I really like his designs but a little annoyance.

If your pocket is deep enough, take a look at the Sebenza. It's a minimalist design so you may not care for the look but it is the best constructed frame-lock folder you can buy. If you buy one and decide you don't like it, you probably won't lose anything on reselling it.

FWIW neither the '12 nor the '13 are chisel grinds, the '12 and '13 though not a std "V" grind like say a spyderco delica is as close to one as EKI makes.

thats the one neoleonight though i'd get it at newgraham.com, its $1 cheaper & NGK is a better dealer than savson, imho anyway.

With all respect , the best Emersons I have ever seen were made by Benchmade . An Emerson 7 , side by side with the Benchmade rendition pales .

I really wanted to get an Emerson snubbie , I was reluctant to buy one on line sight unseen . Checked out three (3) at a dealers , all had REAL f/f issues .

I like the 7 a lot , and still carry the old Benchie . Emerson is one of the plankowners of the tactical genre , they have a long pedigree . This prolly accounts for their sales . Bang for buck Id rather have a Spyderco Endura waved , than any of the recent production Emersons Ive seen . For 2-300 Canuck bucks , ther is better stuff out there .

I sincerley believe the Benchie is a better value for money . I have owned about 8 Emerson production models over the years , and inspected many others . I think thats a fair /good random sample . No comment on the customs , they may be a different story .
